The date we (as a nation) have chosen to celebrate our pride in being Australian only serves as a reminder to Indigenous peoples of the great losses they have incurred in land, culture, kin, well-being and knowledge; definitely not a day of celebration. This is not a campaign to abolish a national holiday, (we are Australia after all!), or prevent people from taking pride in Australia. This is a campaign about reconciliation and respect for Australia's first peoples.
What better way of helping non-Indigenous Australians understand the past and its impacts on Indigenous peoples today, than to acknowledge the affront the current date we hold our national day of pride on, (26th January), is to Indigenous peoples, and alter it?
