Dear Public Officials:

San Francisco's Sustainability Plan and the City's General Plan call for
Open Space Standards for every neighborhood in the City. Then the Tenderloin, with its 1.29 acres of open space, falls well short of the 7.8 acres per 1,000 residents as mandated by the San Francisco Sustainability Plan and the Citys General Plan. The Tenderloin's 30,000 residents require a minimum of 234acres. Please sign this petition and support the movement to halt all development on the remaining open lots in the Tenderloin and support their conversion to open space.

Facts
Current Open Space in the Tenderloin:
.97 acres at Father Alfred E. Boeddeker Park Jones @ Eddy
.21 acres at Sgt. John Macaulay Park Larkin @ O'Farrell
.11 acres at Turk/Hyde Mini Park Turk @ Hyde

Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,

    • The issue of open space in the Tenderloin needs focused attention. Population density is increasing in the area with little thought be given to a concomitant increase in amenities. Population pressures are sure to negatively affect an already tenuous qualify of life .

    • Streets like the unit block of Jones and unit block of Turk are good candidates for vacating the street for open space, as well as the many open parking lots in the Tenderloin

    • The Tenderloin needs deep, physical changes so that positive street energy can take place to replace negative street behavior. More public space is an excellent way to bring children, youth, families, and the elderly out into the community. The Tenderloin needs places of community, recreation, and connection. Let's start with open spaces -- now.

    • Grammercy Park in New York would be a good model for an open space that makes an extraordinary impact upon the neighborhood in which it sits.

    • We all need outdoor space to enjoy, to relieve stress, to be part of and to interact in our community. The Trinity Plaza rebuild will have 63,000 square feet of open space on a little over 4 acres, and the TL deserves the same kind of treatment. After all, it's for the emotional health of our citizenry.
