Start At Home: Positive Portrayals of Homebirth on TV

We, the undersigned, are interested and pledge to watch an HGTV show on homebirth.

The current slogan for HGTV is "Start at Home." If there ever were to be slogans and taglines for homebirthing families, that would be it. Home is the best place to start out a new life: it is truly a place for new beginnings and celebrations.

There are alot of birth shows on TV, all of which are centered around highly medicalized births. There are a growing number of families in the United States who are considering, planning and having at home birth (sometimes called DIY births).HGTV has a unique opportunity to show how homes can be the best place to start life and a place where that new beginning can be celebrated.

We pledge to wach a show like this portraying birth as a "normal" event that families can celebrate within their homes, as opposed to the unnaturalness of hospital birthing. The homebirthing community and supporters are looking for the media to portray birth in the way it ideally can be for the majority of families.

The show could portray a homebirthing expert (typically a midwife) consulting with families planning a homebirth to make the necessary preparations for their homes: including up to date information on birth tubs, birth kits, bedding and bathroom essentials for expectant families, new moms and newborn babies.

    • women have been having births in the saftey of their own homes in accordance with their own sense of spirituality for centuries to portray a healthy baby being born in a manner that does not support big pharma or the private interests of medical lobyists is both ridiculous and censorous. I wonder how much the medical industry pays you to keep you in lies in order to disuade mothers from making their own choices. Effectively taking money from the mouth of billionaires and an industry that seeks to make us ill in order to cure us. Rethink your policy and make the right choice for women by allowing them to make their own choices with equal and fair reporting on the topic of home birth

    • I would love to see home birth portrayed on TV. There are many preparations that occur when having a homebirth. Most women have a list of items they need for baby and the birth, but also I have always wanted to get certain home projects completed before the new baby arrives. HGTV could do a show capturing how each mother creates her own unique "nest".
