Over the past few months, the Sri Lankan government has launched an intensive military offensive against Tamil areas in the northern part of the country. Amnesty International reports that this offensive has displaced over 300,000 Tamil civilians, who are confined to an increasingly-shrinking region as the offensive continues. The Sri Lanka military has utilized indiscriminate aerial bombing and shelling against Tamil areas. Human Right Watch reports that over 2,000 civilians were killed in safe zone and over 5,000 injured due to Sri Lanka Government military action in the last two months. The Sri Lankan government has refused to allow aid organizations and journalists into the conflict area. According to the UN, no humanitarian convoy has been allowed access into the region since January 16, 2009. Doctors Without Boarders has medical teams and equipment standing by, but are being refused entry into the affected area. In the meanwhile, civilian areas - particularly hospitals are being shelled and destroyed, with hundreds dying daily.
The Government directed Tamil civilians to a 16 -sq mile "safe zone" but proceeded to bomb and shell this "safe zone", according to reports from the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross. We have all seen pictures in the media of parents carrying children on their back and running to avoid indiscriminate bombing & shelling by the Sri Lankan army. The ethnic conflict has exploded into a full scale genocidal war and it is the civilians who are bearing the brunt of the carnage.
Eelam Tamils share a profound and deep-rooted cultural, religious and historical relationship with India. It is this relationship that makes us natural allies and friends with India. Our shared values and ideals are crucial when the region is increasingly being seen as geopolitically important by many different powers.
Countries all over the world including U.S. have called for immediate ceasefire and to allow medical and humanitarian aid to reach the war victims. We ask Government of India to call for an immediate ceasefire and to urge Sri Lanka government to allow humanitarian and medical aid to the victims. Indian has moral responsibility to stop the genocidal war persecuted by the Sri Lanka government on Tamil civilians. India, the great land of Mahatma, cannot be silent on the Tamil Genocide.

- To look at atrocities and do nothing when one has an option is not a humane thing.

- Please inform Ms. Sonia Gandhi and her Congress Party that with the help of India, Pakistan and China the sinhala dominated sri lankan government forces have killed more than 300,000 Tamils and that is enough for justice.

- I request India to apply pressure on Lanka to stop its genocide of Tamil people. Also, India must recognize Tamil Eelam.
