Dear Shri Pawan Chamling
Chief Minister
Sikkim
We write to request your office to investigate into the Teesta Dam project. While local residents have raised their voice against the project, including a hunger strike that commenced on June 20, 2007 (see: http://weepingsikkim.blogspot.com/), it is surprising that such an large initiative can move forward without the buy-in of the very communities that the natural resources are being seized from.
Sustainability of our natural resources is a very important criteria in the development of such projects. For a brief summary of impacts of Dams please see http://www.idsnet.org/Resources/Dams/Development/Impact.html
Local community involvement and support is very feasible, if they are educated on the sustainability criteria that the proposed Dam meets, and its potential negative impacts. Such negative impacts can be evaluated independently for an unbiased assessment. This should also help with the local community buy-in.
Therefore we petition your office to kindly initiate an independent impact study of the Dam, as well as take effective steps to reduce any negative impacts. Yours is a beautiful state that has much to benefit through Sustainable Development initiatives. Please do not pass this opportunity to do your part in keeping it beautiful and ecologically sustainable.

- Sikkim needs to develop in order to meet the needs of it's own communities first and then think about providing power to rest of the country, You cannot recreate the lost beauty of the Himalayas

- The entire world is going crazy, for many reasons but especially with the environemental protection, and we are just strating to be conscious about it. Serious considerations should therefore be taken before proceeding to appealing capitalistic projects. As Humans and environment are the future of our world. It might sound hypocrite from a French girl who lives in a comfortable developped country, but most of us are now realizing that protecting our global environment is crucial for future generations. All the best, Marie

- Building a Dam alters the hydrologic regime of the rivers and threatens survival of numerous species on which humans and other organisms depend. To evaluate the pros and cons a detailed ecological assessment of the area should be conducted. Socio-economic and cultural well being of the local communities should be the TOP priority. Do not forget that we are one of the millions of species inhabiting planet Earth and we have no right to endanger the survival of others. Therefore, make an intelligent decision otherwise future generations would never be able to forgive us for our mistakes.
