A few weeks ago, Nedra Rollins, a housekeeper at the NCSU Vet. School, and UE local 150 union member, was unjustly fired. She is a long time union member that has stood up for her co-workers when they have been subjected to unfair treatment in the past.
We are calling on workers and students to support her by signing and circulating this petition.
Background on Nedra Rollins' case:
At the Vet School, all workers and students are given ID badges that must be swiped to enter the building. In August, the management began to demand that housekeepers leave their badges on campus when they finish working. This is a violation of the current ID badge policy for facility operations employees (i.e. housekeepers, groundskeepers, maintenance workers). The policy states:
"Each university employee is issued an identification badge at the time of hire, which is to be worn when on university premises." (Facilities operations policy #302)
Workers who turn in their badges at the end of their workdays risk harassment by university police if stopped and questioned while on campus.
Housekeepers are the only people on campus that are asked to hand in their ID badges at the end of their shifts. Other campus workers and students are not asked to do so. There has been a long history of unjustly blaming housekeepers for the theft of campus property. This policy unfairly targets housekeepers for surveillance based on an unfounded belief that they are responsible for these thefts.
On August 5th 2008, Nedra Rollins refused to hand in her badge. She knew that not wearing her badge while on campus is a violation of the ID badge policy and was afraid that university police might stop her before or after her shift. After a month of harassment by managers for simply complying with campus policy, she was unjustly fired for insubordination on September 11th 2008.
Please show your support for Ms. Rollins by calling Housekeeping Asst. Director, Albert Scott, at 919-515-9841 or emailing him at albert_scott@ncsu.edu.

We, the undersigned workers and students at N. C. State University, are appalled that the University administration discriminates against housekeepers. The housekeepers at the Vet school were asked to separate from their I.D. badges at the end of their shifts while other workers and students were not. We call for the reinstatement of Ms. Nedra Rollins who was unjustly fired on September 11th 2008.

- Housekeepers should not singled out for constant surveillance, while everyone else can come and go as they please. This is a clear case of harassment of and discrimination against working class people. I strongly urge Mr. Scott to reinstate Nedra Rollins. I am grateful to Ms. Rollins for standing up for herself, her coworkers, and all working class people.

- I am a former student of NCSU and I am disappointed in my university for its unjust and ultimately classist actions. NCSU workers are the backbone of the campus and should have democratic leadership over their working conditions, payment, and treatment by students and other NCSU staff.

- IF FACTS AS PRESENTED ARE ACCURATE, THE FIRING OF MS. ROLLINS APPEARS TO BE ILL-ADVISED AND POSSIBLY UNFAIR AND UNJUST TREATMENT FOR COMPLYING WITH RULES ON ID BADGES.

- This is a case of damned if you do and damned if you don't. It seems unreasonable to have bureaucratic policies at a single institution that conflict with one another.
