With no consultation to any of its Muslim Students, Staff or Community Members; the UEA has imposed a decision to deny the Muslim students access to the Suffolk Terrace Prayer Rooms from June 2008 onwards.

We would like to express our strong dissatisfaction of the decision taken by the University of East Anglia. These facilities are central to the well-being of Muslim students, staff and family members who utilise these premises on a daily basis. The UEA has gained international recognition for its understanding and respect of the needs of Muslim students and staff throughout the Muslim World. It is however a grave concern to all that the institute has decided to take such drastic action, with little or no consultation of the Muslims at UEA.

We the undersigned demand an immediate retraction of the decision to confiscate the Suffolk Terrace Prayer Rooms and urge the UEA to find ways other than to depriving Muslim student's of their basic facilities in order to meet needs for small storage space on campus.

    • Could the university think about the negative impact of this action on the UEA Muslim community and about the negative impact on attracting more international students to study at the UEA?

    • Its completely unfair to deprive Muslim students of that room in Suffolk terrace, I have seen it personally that it has been used in daily basis. The room is close to the library and therefore a very convenient place especially in exam periods for student to pray. Its even more disappointing that it will be converted to a storage place. I sincerely request that this decision is reversed, because it is clearly not in the interest of UEA students.

    • This place is known as a prayer room for more than 15 years. This room is still in use and therefore I am sure the university understands the spiritual value of this place to many. Hope UEA will continue to keep this place as a prayer room. Thanks

    • I quite like the place, it offers a quick way of getting to prayers, especially if you are in the library

    • We the national and international students always try to encourage our Muslim (brothers and sisters) students to join UEA mainly because of its tolerance and freedom of believe for all faiths and for providing excellent Islamic facilities for both brothers and sisters.

    • Too bad for you. You are at the university to study - not to pray. There are more than enough mosques in UK but I don't see many Christian churches in the muslim countries and Saudi Arabia won't even permit a single church to be built unless the Pope acknowledges that Mohammed is the prophet of God. Why should the West accommodate the needs of foreign muslims when Islam will not reciprocate - when in fact Islam wants to be the only religion in this world?

    • The UEA was a home for understanding different cultures and beliefs - it is a great shame that this ethos has been lost by the current batch of administeration staff.

    • I am a Christian student at the UEA studying the subject of Spirituality and Mental Health. The NHS is going to some lengths to accomodate different religions as it acknowledges the health features of having a faith. If the UEA is closing prayer rooms it is to be regretted.
