Due to the current budget crisis, the State of Utah is looking at cutting funding for over 40 Utah Highway Patrol officers in addition to cuts at the Department of Corrections and cuts in funding for local law enforcement.
We the undersigned petition the Utah State Legislature and the Governor of Utah to reconsider these cuts. Public safety is one of the primary tasks of government and the funding cuts to deal with our budget issues should be found elsewhere.

    • There are a lot of other things that should be cut before police services, especially in a down economy when crime will go up.

    • We are a law enforcement family. My husband and son are police officers and my other son is a prison guard. It would be crazy to cut in an area that is already needing more people .

    • With recessionary times we need law enforcement even more so due to desperate people doing desperate things to survive. Law enforcement can not be cut or my rights as a citizen are at stake.

    • If cut, the general public will feel the implications of felons being released without any programing (teaching skills, etc.) Safety of the public should be a high prioity.

    • We can cut many things in government, but public saftey (and education) have to be top priorities

    • Crime is already high and as people get desperate and economically strained, crime usually increases. Keep our law enforcement. Cut prisoner benefits - cable TV, etc. to reduce law enforcement budgets. Make prison a miserable place to be and make people think twice before committing crimes,

    • I think it is so important that we not cut public safety and corrections! We need to get rid of unneccessary programs right now, such as preschool in our public schools, and forgein language for Kindergateners! I hope the that legislature will think things through and while preschool and other extra actvities are nice, they should not be place ahead of public safety!!

    • Government's role is to protect. Education can be handled by the private sector, but law enforcement generally is a government responsibility.
