On May 1, 2005, the Sunday Times of London published a memo leaked from a source in the British government. This memo contained details of a July 2002 meeting between President Bush and Prime Minister Tony Blair regarding the purported threat posed by Iraq. According to this memo, Bush and Blair had decided to go to war against Iraq by this time, and were determined to do so even to the extent of ensuring that "the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy" of eliminating Saddam Hussein's regime. London has not disavowed this memo, and at least one former American official has claimed the events in this memo did take place.

If, in fact, they did take place, there is evidence that the president is guilty of as many as five potentially impeachable acts:

1. Lying to Congress about the evidence supporting the case for invasion
2. Conspiring with Blair to mislead Congress and Parliament about the evidence of Iraq's purported threat
3. Knowing about Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's diversion of funds earmarked for the Afghan conflict to preparations for the upcoming Iraqi conflict
4. Directing the falsification of evidence supporting the case for invasion
5. Sending a letter to Congress claiming that Iraq gave aid and comfort to al-Qaeda when that evidence was false

While the president may not be guilty of all of these acts, the allegations raised by this memo are too serious to ignore. We, the undersigned, request a full investigation into the events spelled out in this memo, and that if there was evidence of wrongdoing, that corrective action be taken against the guilty parties up to and including impeachment proceedings.

    • This must be investigated. If Bush sent our troops into Iraq under false pretense, he must be held responsible--even if it means impeachment.

    • As a Democratic Navy veteran, I find these circumstances more than shameful; they are absolutely criminal. The entire Bushevik administration and their enablers in Congress need to be deported to the International Criminal Court in the Hague, Netherlands.
