Dear Sir,

We , the citizens of India, express our deep concern about the two 'anto-terror bills" that have recently been passed in both houses of parliament , without giving any opportunity for debate at national and state level. We do not agree to the perception that the protection of human rights stand in opposition to effective action against "terrorism". WE do hold that the existing laws of the land are sufficient enough to tackle the acts of violence , committed by "terrorists". The newly introduced these two bills seriously suspend, limit, undermine and even destroy certain non-derogable rights ,as recognized by International Laws and Covenants. These bills show a spirit of minimalism, particularly in the arena of the rights of suspects and defandants in the criminal process. And there is every chance of misuse of the provisions as our past experiences have shown this in case of TADA and POTA. We want repeal of these two bills.

Hence, for the sake of upholding human rights, for stregethening principles of the rule of law and for keeping India's International commitment to International laws and standards relating to human rights, we urge upon you not to give assent to the bills and request the Government to reconsider for withdrawal of the bills.

    • No law can stop terrorism. The laws are made to address a cause while abuse of the same overpowers due to politicalisation of administrations throughout the world. A true development as per Indian Constitution & a collective & patriotic vigil by both the administration & the civil society can prevent terrorism. For that the existant laws are enough as many of us think. MADAM PLEASE DON'T GIVE ASSENT .

    • Draconian laws are apart from being huge assaults on human rights also disincentivise painstaking investigations, so very necessary to stall acts of terrorism, by empowering the police to arbitrarily hang or at least indefinitely detain people picked up at whims. These also would also cause further alienation of minority population as they are going to be hugely victimised given the deep-seated bias of the police and general administrations and thereby further aggravate the problem on hand.

    • There are enough laws and we do not need any such law which infringe our civil liberties and movement. A responsible government and accountable bureacracy are the need of the hour to win people's confidence to support them. demonising a community and encouraging others by not chargesheeting them would damange cause of India as a country . We need secular laws to be implemented strongly and not religious rights to define our ways of life.

    • These bills, which have been passed by the government and parliament at a time when the people are still shaken by the terrorist attacks, would be used as tool of repression against the various peoples' movements in India against dispossession and displacement, and to victimize minorities. These bills need to be repealed immediately.

In the name of security , the entire population would henceforth be viewed and considered as 'possible terrorists" / "terror suspects and are bound to live in a atmosphere of insecurity , fear and of intimidation, which in turn would defeat the very declared purpose of the bills- to ensure the security of population.
