North Star Academy Parent Petition Statement In Opposition to Proposed Policy Changes, removal of Light Blue shirts and Navy bottoms
Prepared November 2008
In light of the school's Uniform Committee's obligation to consider parent feedback in its recommendations to the Board, the undersigned parents submit this petition in OPPOSITION to the proposed elimination of light blue shirts and navy blue bottoms. The undersigned cite one or more of the following three reasons for their opposition:
1. North Star Academy's Uniform Quality will be diminished if Navy Bottoms are eliminated.
Clean and crisp uniforms are a source of pride for North Star Academys students, parents, and staff. We all want to adhere to that standard, but as every parent knows, keeping light-colored bottoms in uniform-quality condition can be challenging. Retaining navy blue bottoms as a choice increases the likelihood of keeping our uniforms in the best possible condition. This is consistent with the Uniform Policy requiring that uniforms be kept in good repair and seasonally/weather appropriate.
2. Eliminating Navy Blue Bottoms and Light Blue Shirts will add Significant Costs to Families.
Without the opportunity to alternate from khaki to navy bottoms, our childrens uniforms will wear faster, requiring more frequent replacement or a greater number of bottoms being placed into our families rotation.
In addition, many North Star Academy families purchased navy bottoms and light blue shirts prior to the Uniform Committee communicating non-Board approved changes to the Uniform Policy. For example, buying ahead or by passing uniforms from older to younger siblings. Despite a phase-in/phase-out period (which hasnt been defined) we will still be discarding wearable and appropriate navy bottoms and light blue shirts, replacing them with khaki bottoms and white shirts, incurring additional expense for our families.
In these more challenging economic times, we believe it is fiscally and socially responsible to keep navy bottoms and light blue shirts in the uniform, pursuant to current policy.
3. Eliminating Navy Bottoms Presents a Special Problem for our Daughters.
Young ladies entering puberty need options to counter their own personal struggles. These problems are impossible to effectively and discretely manage under a khaki colored bottom only policy. A policy of no dark colored bottoms distinctly disadvantages these children during what can be an extremely difficult time of their lives. This problem isnt resolved by making dark bottoms a middle school only choice as some young ladies enter puberty prior to middle school.

- With the abundance of changes that have occurred in the uniform policy over the past two years (ie. elminating oxford shirts, ties, Land's End cargo pants and shorts, Land's End sleeveless v-neck sweater) we have calculated that our family has had to discard over $500 worth of good, usable clothing purchased solely for NSA use. The first year that NSA opened, we had an older son in sixth grade. We had planned on being able to pass this clothing down to our younger son. That option was taken away from us due to these changes. This has been a complete frustration, since we have always adhered to NSA's uniform policy and at the same time observed many other families blatantly going against the rules set in this policy. Our family requests that the uniform committee not make any additional changes to the uniform policy.

- Also, it would be nice to keep the navy jumpers and skirts for the girls as well.

- The children are very limited as it is this year. I am not understanding why they are trying to eliminate choices again. I am also concerned with my daughter who is reaching puberty not being able to wear dark colored bottoms to school. I still wear dark colors on those days and feel my daughter will be much more comfortable in dark bottoms when that time comes.

- Please help many families to weather the current economic climate by allowing more options and thus keeping the current uniform policy

- Dark bottoms make sense; especially given the fact that we are now opening 7th / 8th grades. It would most likely offer peace of mind to girls going through puberty. And we love the light blue polos. To make things easier on the committee / parents / staff maybe you require certain pieces be purchased only from specific vendors. This would limit the the chances for non-conforming items, while still giving parents the current uni options. Just a thought. But y'all are doing a fantastic job...uniforms and its management is a huge deal! Thanks guys!

- Another point to consider is that these items are not resellable and that is another expense.

- You people who signed this petition need to get a life! Did any of you bring this issue up to the uniform committee? Did you complete the uniform survey? Have you gone to a Board meeting and bring up your concerns during public comment? I grew up in Catholic school and what North Star has is not a uniform policy, it is a list of "options". I think the Board should go to three options: Standard, dress, PE. One top & on bottom. Is that what you want? If you keep whining like this that is where the board is going to go. All you people need to quit whining as you all knew navy was proposed to be going away along time ago. Do you not read the board updates? Try going to a Board meeting once and a while. Follow the process, talk to the committee, if you do not get what you want go to the board. The board is awesom and will listen. I know that last time uniforms were an issue they put the problem person on the uniform committee. This is a new school so there will be changes.

- 1-How does color diminish quality & how does it affect our ability to keep them in good condition? 3-color choice has nothing to do with the ability to keep clothes in "good repair". Good repair is stitching, no holes in pants, etc.. If you add color quality than I don't like blue because blue fades and you have 70 colors of blue. 4-We parents were told in, August?, that blue was going away so it should not add costs. 5-Why would khaki only add costs? You have to buy the same number of khaki pants as you would blue + khaki? If you need to buy 4 pairs of pants you have to buy 4 pair of pants! 6-I agree that the color could be a challenge for girls that have their menstrual cycle, that is a good point. Perhaps we should go to a navy only policy. I agree with the previous person who said that we have too many options...the kids don't match, they look similar. It is a parents job to be the boss and not be their friend.

- I still have 0ver $150 in clothes previously banned! I can't sell these items or even donate them as they have the school emblem on them! We're tired of the annual change, It is NOT necessary! The kids look great!

- Lets just be mothers first and remember what it was like becoming a young women. For that reason alone the uniforms should stay the same.

- With four children, three of which being girls, I very much appreciate the option of keeping navy bottoms. From an economic stand point I also have over 25 shirts, all embroidered, that can not be passed down. The yellow shirt has a specific vendor, I would not be opposed to having to buy the light blue shirt from a specific vendor as well to help keep consistency in the color.

- I endorse this petition. This is our 3rd year at Northstar and we have alot of unuseable and expensive clothes because of the changes to policy. We have always made sure our child is in correct uniform from the correct vendors. We have been told that the Uniform Policy was meant to help reduce financial outlay. That has only been the opposite. I think the children look wonderful, especially in assemblies and events. We should be pleased and not eliminate these options. Thank you for the work that you have done.
