Many of our elected officials have failed to practice basic rules of good money management for too long. They have not received maximum value when spending and have continued to increase spending in both good and poor economic times. They have borrowed money to finance their outrageous spending habits, costing Americans even more money over time. Our elected officials on the Federal level have taken local money and redistributed it via outrageous pork-barrel projects for the purpose of their own reelection campaigns.
Most Americans recognize that our Governments should manage money like individuals must: by living within their means. Now the self-serving, greedy ways of elected officials on the Federal level have brought America to the verge of economic collapse and the only solution they can present is more of the same. Since their solutions will not fix the problems and they do not know how to fix the problems, we support the plan stated below to help America get back on track. Many of these ideas are simple solutions, which should have been implemented long ago, but have not, because it benefits those elected officials to keep our fiscal systems complicated. It is time we take back America and stop allowing them to pit us against each other based on things like religion, race, gender, and net worth.

Given the current economic troubles that many Americans are enduring, we support and are demanding our elected officials to pass the following changes to the fiscal policies of America.
A 10\% across the board reduction in spending (every department)
A balanced budget Amendment
Complete overhaul of the tax system with an implementation of a combination Flat Income Tax and National Sales Tax.
o The Flat Tax rate will be set at 10\% with no deductions or credits and no exceptions. Of every dollar made, 10\% goes to the Federal Government.
o The National Sales tax will be set at 2\% with no exceptions. Of every dollar spent, 2\% goes to the Federal Government.
Reduce Business taxes to 10\%
Presidential Line item Veto for spending bills
Elimination of Earmark spending

It is long past time that Congress and our Executive Branch operate on behalf of the citizens of the Untied States of America just like the citizens themselves have to operate with their personal finances: spend less, borrow sparingly, and live within your means.

    • Our government is totally corrupt and needs to be cleaned out, beginning at the top. Most politicians should be tried for treason and punished accordingly. They do not seem to realize or care that they are destroying our country. Our founding fathers would be so ashamed and disappointed in our "leaders"

    • Way to go, Doc Thompson! I have been wanting to petition the government, and your petition is one of several that Americans need to send to Congress. I have already emailed my Congressmen that if they vote for this bailout, I am not voting for them.

    • I'd add an additional request of term limits to this petition. There is one reason for being out of touch with "Main Street" and that's because most of these folks haven't lived on one for so long (or if at all) and have spent years in Washington being a career politician. Limit their exposure to the superficial world of DC and we'll get a new crop of representatives every couple of years that will look out for the people.

    • it's time to stop and think about us, the real american people. All of you, the us congress are so out of touch with the true american people. how we live, how we make ends meet, how we provide and how we care for one another. we do this ourselves and we have pride in what we have done and how we did it. if we go over our budget for the month, we stay home and we don't spend next's month budget. you, as our representatives, don't care. all you do is spend, spend and if there is no money, so be it, you will spend more of OUR MONEY and worry about it later, like now. You don't worry about where your next paycheck, because I'M PAYING your salary and your not listening are caring about what we want. I hope you are all voted out of office and are totally out of a job. not to get a job as a lobbyist. you all suck
