PETITION TO PROTEST THE PROPOSED IMMIGRATION LAW LIMITING THE 6 MONTHS VISITOR VISA TO 30 DAYS AND DISALLOWING ALIENS UNDER THESE CATEGORIES TO CHANGE TO STUDENT STATUS .
To: INS
Attention: Mr. Commissioner
Dear Sir,
We, the undersigned, are signing this petition to strongly protest the proposed Immigration law, revising the 6 months visitor visa to 30 days.
We understand that the proposed immigration law has been introduced to increase security in US by curbing terrorists activities following the 9/11 mishap. However introspecting the effectiveness of this proposed immigration law, it does not seem to be having any real teeth to curb terrorist activities , more over it brings down the values of the US federal government as a fearless entity.
By imposing such rules not only the industry, business or economy of USA would be hurt but most disastrous would be the feeling of proud americans bowing down to bunch of gun holding guys. The imposing of such a rule means a clear victory of terrorists on US citizens sentiments.
The travel industry has already bounced on this proposal. We wish to bring to your interest that this law would have the greatest impact on our lives as aliens , since we have our parents and family coming to the USA to visit us and spend time with us. A number of associates also visit the US for business dealings and technical affairs. Hence, the proposed change will almost incise our relationships either with our family or with the USA work industry.
Strong measures to curb terrorism is the need of the hour and we must leave no stone unturned to work towards that . But laws such as these fail to achieve that . They merely cause agonies to innocents. It flies in the face of logic to believe that one month in not sufficient for a terrorist to complete his mission . We fail to understand how people which such high intellect could come out with such a decision. What is most interesting is that the INS has come out with such an idea after its major faux pas of issuing student status to deceased terrorists .
Most unexplainable is the clause which requires a person on visitor or business status to go back to his home country to obtain a student status. How good will such a law to our dear adopted homeland USA to protect itself from terrorism .Under the new dispensation, terrorists of 9/11 could have come on any visa and still done his job as the new laws make no mention of background check of the applicant. !!!!!!
Cutting short the stay in USA or introducing unmerited rules like this will never help INS in preventing Terrorism. Instead, better visa processing procedures including a check on the credentials of the visa seeker in their home land or relaxing the proposed law for ages above 50 would help.
Obviously the law has been drafted in haste to appease sections of government which have been heavily critical of the bunglings committed by the INS . We remain confident that common sense will prevail and this proposed change will be rescinded immediately. We also hope that USA will come out with very effective ways to screen all entrants to the US .
Please reconsider your proposed change, as it does not stand to your goal of averting terrorism.
We, the undersigned, are signing this petition to strongly protest the proposed Immigration law, revising the 6 months visitor visa to 30 days
Sincerely,
Indian American and All Indians Affected By US Immigration Laws

- It is vital that immigrants contributing to the US economy and cultural diversity have access to share their lives with their relatives around the globe and be able to seek their assistance and encouragement as and when needed

- 30 Days is too little. It should be atleast 3 months ... that's the period of time somebody would like their family to spend when they take the trouble of visiting this wonderful country.

- My parents visit us for 6 months and enjoy spending time with us as we cannot take time off from work for long periods and visit them. These senior citizens are no threat to this great country and it is sad that you want to restrict visitors visa for 30 days. Instead please try to enforce better scrutiny of passports and review of petitions for visa.

- I agree that you need some kind of checkpoint. But you shouldnot punish everybody for some. This 30 day cap is ridiculous ... you should extend this to at least 3 months. When somebody travel from coountries like India, they expect to spend time with their family here for at least a period of 3 months or so. 30 days is too little ... You should revisit this timeframe.

- 30 days is too little. Plenty of visitors from all around the world visit the US for longer than 30 days. These folks are not a threat to our national security and should not be treated as such.
