PETITION
We, the undersigned, are very concerned by the extreme action of the board of the Albert Ellis Institute in dismissing the President, Albert Ellis, who not only created the system of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy, upon which the Institute is based, but who also bought the building in which the Institute is housed, recruited and trained all of the current and former staff members of the Institute, and wrote most of the books and pamphlets that are sold by the Institute, and who almost single-handedly promoted REBT into a prominent role worldwide, but who is also 92 years old, and physically unwell.
We have read the New York Times article (which is displayed on the foot of this web page: http://www.rebt.cc/_wsn/page12.html, about 80\% of the way down the page), and we agree with Dr Ellis that he has been treated unfairly. We agree with other commentators that he has been the victim of a palace coup; and we call for him to be reinstated forthwith, and treated with the dignity , respect and sympathy that he deserves for his fifty years of dedicated, and single-minded devotion to the Institute and its work.
We also call for an investigation into the circumstances in which the Executive Director brought about this scandalous act of organizational destruction; the immediate reinstatement of Dr Ellis as President of the Institute; and a public apology and appropriate compensation package.

- Ellis' material well being *should* be taken care of and the institute *should* focus on REBT only. Rational behavior is in order.

- What you have done to Albert Ellis will live on within you all, for the rest of your lives. I suggest you think very carefully about your actions - you will have many years left to live with what you have done to this man. Other people in the rest of the world may not care or know about the issues that are being discussed - but you all know. Can you be at peace with yourselves? If you behave with less than impeccable honesty and integrity with Albert Ellis, you are inviting the world, whether you believe this or not, to treat you all in the same way. Is that what you want? What opinion do you want others ot have of you? What you do now will be part of history. It is all up to you - you all get to live with what you do - for the rest of your lives.

- REBT is a humanistic philosophy. The boards' recent treatment of Albert Ellis is anything but humanistic. I urge the board of directors to reconsider their actions and to treat Dr. Ellis with the humanitarian ideals that he has displayed throughout his career.

- Albert Ellis IS Rebt. He created it. He is its foremost exponent. To have Rebt, or the Albert Ellis Institute, without Albert Ellis, is a veritable contradiction in terms. Al is an imperfect human being. It would appear that one of his flaws was in choosing the very people who are now attempting to destroy his life's work.

- Albert Ellis and his ideas greatly contribute to my enjoyment of life and I will be forever grateful for that. To me the Albert Ellis Institute, aka REBT Institute, aka RET Institute do not exist without him.

- Let's support the man without whom the Institute would not exist. Al creates a "not-for-profit" organization, and it bites him in the end. Too bad it is not "for profit" (it would be just as legitimate) so he could tell the board where to go.

- Clearly the Institute has ceased to respect Ellis' contribution to (and creation of) the field. The fact that they ended his weekly sessions demonstrates this boldfaced insult.

- I personally owe a debt to Ellis from what I have learned reading his books and hearing his lectures. I hope the schism between the Institute and Ellis himself can be resolved. The Institute doesn't deserve to keep its name if it can't resolve it.

- Neither Ellis nor REBT need to be softened to satisfy the squeamishness of the AEI board and officers. Without Albert Ellis back on active duty, the ALBERT ELLIS Institute will be a farce.

- Albert Ellis founded the Institute, founded REBT, served the Institute his entire career, took only a small salary and put the rest of his earnings back into the Institute, spoke all over the world to teach about REBT, lived at the Institute, guarded the Institute, and needs to be reinstated and keep the Institute on track in its course, as he the founder established it to be. He deserves respect from the Board and does not deserve the heartache of a lawsuit to protect his lifelong investment in the Institute. I hope the Institute will live on in his name maintaining the methods and standards of treatment he created. He gave great talks at his 90th birthday party and at a subsequent Friday night workshop I attended. He is capable of continuing his life's work, and if he needs special accommodations for his age and state of health, then the Institute needs to provide them, in accordance with the Americans With Disabilities Act and the EEOC, which prohibits discirmination based on age.
