As a student community we express our sympathy towards the victim of Patan incident in which a girl student is inhumanly gang raped. The incident itself suggests that there are many loopholes in the governance as well as in the education system and the Government should make the necessary changes. The following changes we demand from the Government.

1. Bring transparency and better awareness to curb the exploitative activities in educational institutions.

2. Appoint a woman officer who can accompany the students and female staff so that their security is ensured.

3. Constitute a committee to tackle the cases of women exploitation in each school, college and university and ensure that the committee works independently and effectively.

4. The Government should provide security, financial aid as well as legal assistance to the victim in such events.

5. In order to give justice to the victims in such sensitive cases the Government has to try such cases in Fast Track Courts or they can constitute a special court for the same purpose.

6. Make proper appointments of security guards and watchman. Provide infrastructural facilities to the hostel students.

7. Allow students to have access to mobile phones, STD booth and other means of communication so that they can keep constant contact with their parents.

8. The accused should be immediately dismissed or retrenched and be tried in the court in no time.

9. Give less importance to internal marks and include female teachers or professors in deciding the internal marks of the students so that the students don't have to be under rapists.

10. The educational department of the state should constantly inspect the schools, colleges and other institutions on a regular basis. All the institutions should be closely scrutinized so that they submit the report of the inspection regularly. The copy of the report should be given to the students as well as to the students.

11. A P.T.C. college should be placed near the residential area so that such incidents are not abetted.

12. There should be female staff with the students when they go out for picnic or study tour.

13. The status and the dignity of the victim should not go down. She should be treated with respect and honor in the respective institutions.

14. Appoint a special commission for students of Backward Class.

15. The picnic, tour, training programme or internship programme should be organized at the end of the last year or semester.

We, the following students of Ankur at Ashadeep, AGSDM (All Gujarat Students Development Movement) and well-wishers of student community all over have put forward our demands to you. We once again strongly condemn the Patan incident. We hereby sign for the same

    • I read about this case on my visit to India and am disgusted that such things happen in this day and age. I thought India was a functioning democracy yet these villains go scot free.
