It is common practice in our courts to use confrontation and adversarial strategies to resolve family matters. However, this approach only further distresses families already in crisis at a time of divorce. With parents committing suicide, or left destitute on the street, it is high time to implement drastic changes to present legislation.
Recommendations:
1. That mediation be made mandatory. That litigation be allowed only after every effort at mediation has been exhausted.
2. That all children comprising a family unit be entitled to equal consideration under Federal Guidelines irrespective of bloodline (save where previous provision has been made).
3. That the practice of imputing income be abolished. That only actual income be assessed when setting child support (save where tax evasion has been proved).
4. That no individuals income be garnisheed below federal 'income assistance' levels.
We, the undersigned, believe it is imperative that the above recommendations be invoked.

- As a former (now retired) department head of a community college program in B.C., I watched in absolute dismay and disbelief how "the system" with all it's soul destroying adversarial processes and it's wildly imputed income assessment nearly drove a Deaf colleague (one of my department staff) to the brink of suicide. That was some 15 years ago. I find it appalling that society and the courts have not moved well beyond these destructive processes and misguided financial assessment calculations since then. Why are families made to grovel at the poverty level (or worse) because of a miserably flawed system? Who really pays? The family and society at large. Desperate people are driven to desperate and destructive measures. We ALL pay the price. Surely we can process social justice and change in these family matters. Where is the will? Get on with it!

- As co-founder of WAPM and one of its spokespersons, I must ask that you consider this petition for its merits. The author is really not asking all that much considering the outlandish preferential, biased and highly father discrimantory treatment that women are given within family courts on a daily basis. Let the fathers be fathers, not ATM's and checkbooks for women that are willingly prostituting their children for financial gain. Thank you. http://www.hometown.aol.com/callaway525

- something needs to be done to make mediation mandatory. Otherwise, the party who knows, or is advised, that the courts will be biased in her favor has no incentive at all to try to work things out.

- People need to understand that equality in family law removes the incentives to ruin families and children. Those who are against it are evil.

- the current family law system is neanderthol...biased..and extremely unfair...it needs to be changed to equally consider both parents remain in the childrens lives after divorce.and there should be consequences for parents who use false allegations to gain further unfair advantages in court.
