Save Basingstokes Specialist Mother and Baby Unit
The signatories of this petition wish to retain this unit in Basingstoke. There are only 14 units of this kind in the country and there is a real risk our unit will be moved to the south of the county.
The expertise and skills of the staff we have would be lost. Patients and visitors would have to travel further and at greater cost.
We call on the Borough Council to work with the Primary Care Trust to keep this excellent facility in Basingstoke

- Remove this facility and the result could be more long term mental illness, more expense for the NHS and babies affected so that they grow into neurotic children.

- There has been a unit here for many years - the first I knew of it was when a colleague used it at the old Rooksdown Hospital in the 1960's. We need mothers and their babies to remain in their home vicinity - visitors are essential at a time when they are already suffering post natal depression. Closing such a unit in Basingstoke would give rise to higher levels of stress for the mother and their direct family and close friends - especially the more vulnerable families., Please think long and hard before removing this facility from our ever increasing population.

- I was in the mother & baby unit myself last year, if it wasn't for them i wouldn't be here now cherishing every moment i have with my baby, and for that I am very grateful. Please don't close the unit, i want other mothers to have the same chance i did in getting better and getting my life back together.

- We cannot afford to lose the dedicated care provided by excellent staff. PND is common amongst mothers and needs specialised care , separate from people with other mental health problems. The MBU is a safe homely environment for mothers and their babies.I was a patient there this year and it saved my life.

- We need to keep this great unit open locally to help other families the way it has helped mine. The staff at the unit were excellent and we can't afford to lose any of their experience if they are unable to transfer to Winchester.

- I have studied psychology for many years and feel there is not enough facilities to assist mental health patients. Help people to help themselves or you will put more pressure on social services in the end.

- It is vital women living in the Basingstoke area continue to have access to healthcare after giving birth. This unit is essential and must not be moved.
