Kцnsstympning av flickor i irakiska Kurdistan/norra Irak

Female Genital Mutilation in Iraqi Kurdistan/North of Iraq

The purpose of this petition is to draw attention to the barbaric and torture-like treatment of young girls in certain parts of Iraqi Kurdistan/north of Iraq. By signing this letter we demand that Iraq is to be added to WHO's list over nations where female genital mutilation exists. There are sufficient evidence and statistics on the problem.

In December 2008, the regional government (KRG) rejected a bill to outlaw genital mutilation in Kurdistan. This is just one example of the negligence of children's and women's needs. We demand a total and immediate ban of female genital mutilation and assistance for the girls and women subjected to genital mutilation. The natural reasons behind female genital mutilation in Kurdistan are for example conservatism and lack of knowledge of the female body and sexuality.

WADI is a German organisation that since 2004 works on the ground against female genital mutilation. In the beginning of 2008 a survey among 25 schools in the Bitwen area in Kurdistan conducted by Wadi showed that 1645 of 1733 girls were mutilated. This is a terrible and unacceptable violation of the Child convention and of human rights.

    • We, the Kurds in Khorasan, do not have the problem of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in our region / Noth-east of Iran. The FMG is against human rights and should be stoped unconditionally. Female children and teenage should not be tortured in this way. (www.cskk.org).
