Petition to Maintain Rash Field for Use by Baltimore Beach

My signature represents my strong feeling that Baltimore Beach should be included by Baltimore Development Corp. in any future plans for Rash Field (including turning this valued urban green space into a parking facility), as it provides a valuable resource for Baltimore area residents and visitors alike. In signing this petition, I certify that I am a Baltimore area resident who supports the initiative to maintain Rash Field for future use by the Department of Parks and Recreations partner Baltimore Beach and the citizens of the greater Baltimore area.

INFORMATION ABOUT BALTIMORE BEACH
Baltimore Beach is an athletic organization founded six years ago to provide citizens of Baltimore and surrounding areas a weekly interactive recreation facility right in our own Inner Harbor, specifically Rash Field. One thousand tons of sand forming seven competition-class nets and a Trapeze School are enjoyed by over 16,000 participants every summer, numbers that have politicians and media proclaiming Baltimore Beach to be the largest inner-city metropolitan volleyball league on the East Coast. An establishment that has created events for the Toyota Pro Beach Volleyball Tour, Waterfront Festival, Forth of July Celebration, International Olympic Committee not to mention an ongoing working relationship with Baltimores Department of Parks and Recreation, Sail Baltimore, and The Office of Promotion and the Arts, to name a few.

    • Shame on the city officials if this recreational facility is lost to a parking garage! What message does this send to the young professionals who have invested in and around the city? How can the city attract and retain young residents while taking away valuable activities such as Baltimore Beach? I suggest they think long and hard before pursuing something as ridiculous as this proposed development or run the risk of losing the very people they have been trying so long and hard to attract into the city to begin with.

    • I think one of the things that makes Baltimore unique is that we have a beach volleyball court in the middle of our city, and the fact that every year it attracts more and more people, including pro beach tournaments! I would think those who care most about the city would want to preserve the areas along the harbor that promote social activity and interaction. Isn't that what the inner harbor is all about?? And you are considering putting a garage in, of all things! What a pathetic way to make money and take up valuable space along our harbor! People have worked very hard to make those volleyball courts what they are today, and it's not fair for you to punish them for it. My question to you is, do you want to retain the young residents that have brought this city back to life, or do you want to chase them off into the counties like every other typical city??

    • The Baltimore Beach courts have provided a great place to enjoy the city and the active members which inhabit the area. I strongly recommend keeping them in Rash Field as it provides a centrally located and very public display for all locals and visitors to enjoy. It creates a very welcoming and positive atmosphere as it demonstrates that we are an active city. By adding a parking lot it closes in the area and makes it dark and uninviting. By keeping the waterfront open and green it shows that Baltimore cares about the environment and is striving to make efforts to promote healthy lifestyles with a fun and relaxed city atmosphere. It would be a travesty to see these courts and Rash Field destroyed for yet another useless attempt by the city to create revenue. Why not spend this tax payer money on building a stronger police force to fight the war on crime and drugs or to create better schools throughout the city? All active locals will be forced to leave the city if their open spaces are taken.

    • The Beach is a big attraction for downtown Baltimore. Participation in more national tours would help make it an even bigger source of revenue's for the city and businesses in the Harbor.

    • Baltimore is a great city for us young working folk to hang out and have some good clean fun because of the variety of social sports that are available. Please don't pave over a rare high profile playing field!

    • The volleyball "beach" is a wonderful amenity that makes it attractive to live downtown. Please remember that a city's citizens, not it tourists, should come first in any public planning.

    • Its all about the tourists near the Inner Harbor. What about the residents of Baltimore City who pay an enormous tax bill? Do something for the residents and leave rash field alone. This is a huge attraction for those to live downtown. The crime and the taxes are not attracting home owners to the city, rash field encourages unity with downtown residents. Keep rash field!

    • Baltimore Beach has the best sand courts that I know of in the Baltimore/Annapolis area. Rash Field is a staple in the volleyball community of Maryland. Many of my friends, including my father, have played frequently at this location for years. Please keep Rash Field inhabited by volleyball.
