In a day and age where there are fewer Vets around to tell younger generations of the past world wars and why we Remember, I think it is important to give young Canadian students something tangible that will be available for generations to come.

Many Canadian kids have heard John McCrae's poem "In Flanders Fields", yet that place and the sacrifices associated with war are somewhat abstract ideas to them. There is nothing physical that the children can tie their thoughts to when thinking about these things.

In an attempt to make it more real for them, I am going to ask the Canadian Government to procure a large amount of soil from the Flanders region of Belgium... large enough so that every elementary school in Canada can have a potted poppy growing in soil from Flanders.
By doing this, children will be able to see and touch something that proves Flanders exists, and the message of Remembrance Day may become all the more real and meaningful for them.

    • I got fired for taking Remembrance Day off here in Alberta,...no other reason. My Father was a War Veteran so I think people now need to remember especially the kids! Another issue is that all the Immigrants should need to take a course about our history because it was our forefathers that died to give us and these "New Canadians" a safe place to live and work.
