Dear Executive Director Carter Smith and Honorable Commissioners:

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has proposed the following beginning 2009-2010:

"the department is looking at extending the early youth only season to include the entire month of October and the late youth-only season by 12 days during January in selected counties to run concurrently with late antlerless and spike seasons. The intent of the proposal is to allow adults and children to hunt together during different special seasons."

The undersigned oppose adding more youth RIFLE hunt days during the Special Archery Season in Texas. We STRONGLY SUPPORT YOUTH HUNTING, but many opportunities already exist for youth to rifle hunt in the State of Texas. Additional youth only rifle hunt days during October will add little in the way of opportunities for youth and will seriously harm the SPECIAL ARCHERY SEASON, for which bowhunters have been annually taxed through the Archery Stamp since 1975. We vote for youth and for bowhunting, but against the above proposed regulation change.

    • Adding youth rifle hunting in October will NOT help recruit new hunters. Other programs should be implemented for new hunter recruitment. Land availability and affordability are the top factors in the declining number of hunters.

    • Legalizing the use of rifles for whitetail deer in the archery season will undermine the preservation of bowhunting in the state of Texas

    • I'm 8 and I bowhunt because it is more challenging. Kids can sit with their parents all the time and hunt.

    • The LSBA encourages youth to get in the woods and with the new rules eliminating the minimum draw weight for archery equipment the entire month of October is now YOUTH archery season as well. This proposal breaches the agreement between bowhunters and TPWD.

    • Not needed to give kids opportunities to hunt. Severely detrimental to the archery season which should be encouraged more by Parks and Wildlife than repeatedly being infringed upon.

    • An extra week sounds more reasonable then the whole month.

    • If you want to bring in more money from hunting you need to do something about rising cost of leases. Some people can't afford it because of price. I am for allowing kids with crossbows but not rifles.

    • Let's use the first 2 weeks of the general season for youth hunters and then just extend the seaon 2 weeks extra so the adults do loose time. The kids would see more deer because they would be hunting the rut.

    • archery is a safer and close up method for the youth to share hunting with a licensed hunter already availible during this time. my 3 sons, the youngest 15 now have all enjoyed the archery season, we get plenty of deer each yr to feed our family of five and i have not harvested a deer in 8 or 9 yrs. thank you, Bob G.
