Petition to Require that the Mayor and the Police Commissioner Increase the Percentage of Persons of Color in Key Positions within the Boston Police Department.
Petition Summary & Background:
Since the inception of the Massachusetts Association of Minority Law Enforcement Officers (M.A.M.L.E.O.) in 1968, the City of Boston has resisted the reality of the persistent and prevalent lack of representation as it pertains to persons of color. Mayor Thomas Menino has falsely created a notion of a solid commitment to diversity. Though the Boston Police Department (BPD) has made small incremental increases, they have not been sustained and today in 2009 - the Boston Police Department has once again lowered the percentage of persons of color in key positions.
Action Petitioned for:
We, the undersigned, are concerned citizens who urge our leaders to act now to address the lack of representation of persons of color in the command and supervisory structure of the Boston Police Department.

- I think it is disgraceful what the mayor has done during his time to purpsosely try and keep officers of color from advancing. He needs to go.

- The only way to bring back community policing, is to break up the good ole boy network which produces officers who do not come from and are most often therefore insensitive to the issues of minority communities, and only serves to feed the mistrust and lack of faith in police by communities of color.

- The time has long since come. The citizens of Boston deserve a diversified work force. The old boy network of nepotism, cronyism and downright racism must cease.
