We, the undersigned, who are Braille display users, friends and family of Braille display users, and teachers of the blind,

*: Believe that accessibility to information for the blind on a par with their sighted piers is a right.

*: Believe that due to this right, and due to the cost of Braille displays, accessing Braille through the use of Braille displays should not be limited by the type of screen reading solution used by the blind.

*: Strongly request that all manufacturers of Braille displays cease basing the drivers of their Braille displays off of particular screen reader drivers, but rather base all Braille display drivers off of the Human User Interface Protocol, which can be found on all Windows computers.

*: This will allow true portability and equal access to information for the blind, as they will be able to use their display with any computer. This will create greater competition in the market for the best Braille display to stand out, grant greater literacy in Braille through greater access to electronic Braille books and other materials, and support the right of all blind people to have accessibility anywhere.

    • I know I already signed this petition but in lieu of FS' fau pas I would like to make just one more comment. When I first moved into this upstairs apartment my parents purchased a microwave. However they found out that Oster, the manufacturers of the microwave, did not carry Braille overlays. So they purchased me a Braille overlay from GE, and my microwave works like a charm. I wonder if Oster and GE are fighting over this. I wonder if one will sue the other, if that hasn't happened already. The point I'm trying to make here is that in most if not all cases, products from two or more different companies are in fact compatible. FS, please correct this problem!

    • I do feel that if Braille Displays were used with the Human Interface Protocol and not with set screen readers, more people may consider using them, plus they are extremely useful for deaf and blind people like myself, who cannot always hear their computers, especially when they have their hearing aids out or are profoundly deaf.

    • I believe anyone should be able to use a braile display with any computer, and should not be charged to use one.

    • I'm partially sighted, so I use both devices for the blind and devices for the sighted. Devices for the sighted are usually much more versatile and easy to use than devices for the blind, which is the opposite of how it should be.

    • I also encourage manufacturers to develop multiline graphical and refreshable Braille display units and work to reduce the production costs associated with the creation of Braille displays.

    • The cost of these devices is atrocious. Hopefully the up-and-comming tactile mouse (which only needs 2 cells) will put these companies in their place! See http://www.tactile-world.com/
