We, the undersigned, who are Braille display users, friends and family of Braille display users, and teachers of the blind,

*: Believe that accessibility to information for the blind on a par with their sighted piers is a right.

*: Believe that due to this right, and due to the cost of Braille displays, accessing Braille through the use of Braille displays should not be limited by the type of screen reading solution used by the blind.

*: Strongly request that all manufacturers of Braille displays cease basing the drivers of their Braille displays off of particular screen reader drivers, but rather base all Braille display drivers off of the Human User Interface Protocol, which can be found on all Windows computers.

*: This will allow true portability and equal access to information for the blind, as they will be able to use their display with any computer. This will create greater competition in the market for the best Braille display to stand out, grant greater literacy in Braille through greater access to electronic Braille books and other materials, and support the right of all blind people to have accessibility anywhere.

    • I so wanted to get one of these for my daughter's graduation from Blind, Inc. but the cost is out of reach for me. In addition to the improvements you're seeking I encourage the manufacturer's to please lower the price.

    • R & D will be necessary, but distributing Windows based drivers will help so many people and allow so many conveniences that it outweighs the convenience to Braille display manufacturers of using screen readers' drivers. Conveniences accruing to users include: ability to use libraries and Internet cafes, ease of installation and less interference with the borrowed computer.

    • When blind people need to use a computer in a public place, they may not be able to install a special driver for their braille display on that computer. If a braille display is plug and play, it will be able to be used with a product that can be used anywhere such as System Access To Go (http://www.satogo.com.)

    • I support any progress in adaptive technology which results in a broader and more versityle use of that technology and competition that may also reduce the cost of the adaptive technology.

    • I feel this is an extremely worthy cause. I currently have the Easy Braille Display from HandyTech North America which is a great display, but only works with JAWS for Windows, or other such screen readers, and is not able to be hooked up to just any computer. Please consider our cause. Thank you.

    • I strongly believe people who are blind should have equal screen reader and braille display access to information on computers. I do not think one should have to use one braille display but they should have a choice.

    • I feel this is a worthy objective, and will lead to access for more blind people who have Braille displays. My only other addition is this. I think methods of updating older braille displays to take advantage of this new driver format should be incouraged so that people having older braille displays can also benifit from this idea.

    • This petition is long over due. Not only will using the human user interface available on all computers help braille display users but it will relieve software developers of the burden to write drivers for specific braille displays which, in turn, could finally reduce the high cost of so much adaptive technology.
