We, the undersigned, who are Braille display users, friends and family of Braille display users, and teachers of the blind,
*: Believe that accessibility to information for the blind on a par with their sighted piers is a right.
*: Believe that due to this right, and due to the cost of Braille displays, accessing Braille through the use of Braille displays should not be limited by the type of screen reading solution used by the blind.
*: Strongly request that all manufacturers of Braille displays cease basing the drivers of their Braille displays off of particular screen reader drivers, but rather base all Braille display drivers off of the Human User Interface Protocol, which can be found on all Windows computers.
*: This will allow true portability and equal access to information for the blind, as they will be able to use their display with any computer. This will create greater competition in the market for the best Braille display to stand out, grant greater literacy in Braille through greater access to electronic Braille books and other materials, and support the right of all blind people to have accessibility anywhere.

- Using a Braille display has greatly increased my motivation to learn about the workings of the PC and Windows, which I found much more frustrating when I had to rely on speech. It seems, all too often, Braille access has been an afterthought in screenreaders rather than being given at least equal priority to speech feedback. Similarly, training in the use of Braille displays (at least in my country) is woefully inadequate. I commend this initiative (ie the petition) and hope we can improve the current situation.

- I'm currently lacking in the braille skills department because of this issue and with the computer age making leaps and bounds, braille display users should have the ability to keep up without having to decide what screen reader to get before buying the braille display.

- I don't currently use a braille display but hope to some day. My feelings are that in the job market the less that has to be done to make things more accessible the more likely that the blind and visually impaired will be employed. If a blind person can use a braille display to access any computer it could open more possibilities in the job market. Also the blind person or organizations is paying less for accessibility long term.

- I would find a Braille display most useful as a totally blind person.

- Braille should be used as much as possible. It should never be substituted by talking media.
