We, the undersigned, who are Braille display users, friends and family of Braille display users, and teachers of the blind,
*: Believe that accessibility to information for the blind on a par with their sighted piers is a right.
*: Believe that due to this right, and due to the cost of Braille displays, accessing Braille through the use of Braille displays should not be limited by the type of screen reading solution used by the blind.
*: Strongly request that all manufacturers of Braille displays cease basing the drivers of their Braille displays off of particular screen reader drivers, but rather base all Braille display drivers off of the Human User Interface Protocol, which can be found on all Windows computers.
*: This will allow true portability and equal access to information for the blind, as they will be able to use their display with any computer. This will create greater competition in the market for the best Braille display to stand out, grant greater literacy in Braille through greater access to electronic Braille books and other materials, and support the right of all blind people to have accessibility anywhere.

- I would love to see this implemented being a braille user, in both my job and at home. To have the access anywhere that anyone else would have sighted or nonsighted would be fantastic.

- I strongly support the concept that blind people should have easy and universal access to computers using Braille if that is their preferred media. The ability to see punctuation and layout is crucial for performing many tasks. For those who are deaf/blind, braille is essential.

- I believe that this is something that is necessary because more and more people use more than one screen reader, and may not rely on one particular screen reader. I am a Jaws user, but am also a user of System Access. I would like to be able to plug in a braille display, and use it regardless of which screen reader I am using.

- As of now, the Braille Sense. Would like to see more options available to use with system access, and Jaws. As of right now, I am unable to use Braille Sense with any screen reader.

- I am a totally blind trainer of adults learning braille. I have used and loved braille for 45 years. I rejoice in the rise in manufacture and availability of braille displays. I can see that there is a link between accessing computers either by screen-reader or braille-display but the two methods are distinct and should be treated separately. The users of braille should not be tied to the presence of a screen-reader on the computer. I heartily support this petition.

- I have used a variety of American and European displays and feel that people should be able to choose any product they want to use not just the ones supported by screenreaders. If we are ever to have any more inovation with regard to better Braille display technology than someone will have to do the development who has a vested interest in bringing technology to market and not just supporting a specific screenreader.
