We, the undersigned, who are Braille display users, friends and family of Braille display users, and teachers of the blind,

*: Believe that accessibility to information for the blind on a par with their sighted piers is a right.

*: Believe that due to this right, and due to the cost of Braille displays, accessing Braille through the use of Braille displays should not be limited by the type of screen reading solution used by the blind.

*: Strongly request that all manufacturers of Braille displays cease basing the drivers of their Braille displays off of particular screen reader drivers, but rather base all Braille display drivers off of the Human User Interface Protocol, which can be found on all Windows computers.

*: This will allow true portability and equal access to information for the blind, as they will be able to use their display with any computer. This will create greater competition in the market for the best Braille display to stand out, grant greater literacy in Braille through greater access to electronic Braille books and other materials, and support the right of all blind people to have accessibility anywhere.

    • I use a Braille Sense and a Power Braille 40. Universal access thru braille displays is an awesome idea. I agree, George. Thanks for your efforts.

    • I think that it would be really cool for braille displays to be used on any computer! That would really help me as well as others out in the job-school markets. Thanks so much for doing this!

    • I support this on bases. The universal standard drivers does not prvent the screen reader or braille Manfacture to utilise the full feature of the display where specific features are not available on other products. For example: A Braille Display might have a braille keyboard plus navigation keys. The Braille keyboard permits input from the display and the navigation keys allow them to navigate the computer.

    • As a future teacher of blind students, I would really love to see something done to make Braille more accessible to all braille readers. This petition seeks to do just that. Literacy and access to information in various forms is a basic right which should not be denied the nation's blind because of the incompatibility of braille displays to work with any computer.
