We, the undersigned, who are Braille display users, friends and family of Braille display users, and teachers of the blind,

*: Believe that accessibility to information for the blind on a par with their sighted piers is a right.

*: Believe that due to this right, and due to the cost of Braille displays, accessing Braille through the use of Braille displays should not be limited by the type of screen reading solution used by the blind.

*: Strongly request that all manufacturers of Braille displays cease basing the drivers of their Braille displays off of particular screen reader drivers, but rather base all Braille display drivers off of the Human User Interface Protocol, which can be found on all Windows computers.

*: This will allow true portability and equal access to information for the blind, as they will be able to use their display with any computer. This will create greater competition in the market for the best Braille display to stand out, grant greater literacy in Braille through greater access to electronic Braille books and other materials, and support the right of all blind people to have accessibility anywhere.

    • I use the Braille Sense from GW Micro. I would like to use a screen reader in conjunction with a Braille display because I know that the Braille Sense has its limitations. I feel that Braille displays should be workable with both Windows-based computers and Macs.

    • I believe that making brail reading devices universally accessible from a standard program on all computers should be dun. At this time blind computer users cant move into the 64 bit platform because the makers of brail devices do not want to update the drivers for theyre own products.

    • I am pleased to see this petition being circulated on the internet. Blind computer users should have the same benefits and options to use computers with as little restrictions as do sighted users.

    • This is definitely a worthy cause. If it does not go forward, I would llike an organization such as ACB to bring a class action suit again all manufacturers that keep proprietary hold of their equipment and thus put a strangle-hold on freedom of choice of screen readers.

    • Such proprietary, non-coorperative methods only serves to create difficulty for the end user. As a user and someone who has worked in the AT industry, I would like to see more cooperation between the limited number of AT companies.

    • The Focus 40 is a really good display. What would make it even better is not having to install Jaws for Windows to utilize the many wonderful features it has to offer, and be able to send information to it with any accessibility product .

    • This is a great thing if we can get it done, but the only problem I see is interfacing this with Linux and Mac when the time comes. Accessibility everywhere means all OS and platforms need to be accounted for.Thanks.

    • make the change, we can't afford to be left any further in the dust than we already are. 64-bit OS's have been out for years already. Come on and let's make this simple!

    • I love braille to bits - paper and displays. In fact, I only have a braille display as I got lucky. Please lets make our lives, and those of manufacturers, easier by taking the hassle out of designing and implementing drivers.

    • This is something that is long beryond happening. Costs have kept us in the dark long enough, making this the most senseable suggestion I've seen in the blind community in a long time! Thank you George for iniating this worthwhile cause.
