We, the undersigned, who are Braille display users, friends and family of Braille display users, and teachers of the blind,

*: Believe that accessibility to information for the blind on a par with their sighted piers is a right.

*: Believe that due to this right, and due to the cost of Braille displays, accessing Braille through the use of Braille displays should not be limited by the type of screen reading solution used by the blind.

*: Strongly request that all manufacturers of Braille displays cease basing the drivers of their Braille displays off of particular screen reader drivers, but rather base all Braille display drivers off of the Human User Interface Protocol, which can be found on all Windows computers.

*: This will allow true portability and equal access to information for the blind, as they will be able to use their display with any computer. This will create greater competition in the market for the best Braille display to stand out, grant greater literacy in Braille through greater access to electronic Braille books and other materials, and support the right of all blind people to have accessibility anywhere.

    • The exorbitant cost of braille displays is also an issue. competition in this market would also help to lower prices and therefore increase accessibility to electronic information. Reading should not be more costly than listening!

    • I wish Braille displays were more inexpensive. It's ironic that those of us who need access technology for using the computer can't afford to get it.This is especially true when one wants to reaed or use Braille. I'm told that just one refreshable Braille cell costs $100.Although I like my BrailleNote mPower 32, I don't see why Braille displays must be tied to a particular screen reader. One should be able to use whatever Braille display they wish with their computer, assuming that one can afford to get one.

    • People should be able to access everything on their computers or to access whatever media they want to using a braille display. Not only that, but it would behoove these companies who make blindness products to find outher ways of making the Braille display so that it is less expensive and more durable.

    • This kind of standardization will go a long way toward accessibility and increase of productivity. I don't know if such standardization is already implemented for braille printers, but if not, such standardization must be pursued for braille displays and braille printers alike. One such consideration is to make PCL Post script codes automatically recognizable by braille displays and braille printers especially those codes that correspond to ASCII characters. There are times when a braille user cannot acquire both a braille display and a braille printer mainly due to the high price tags of such devices. This is when it would be helpful if braille displays could also function as a kind of virtual print out. Of course with such a feature, braille displays would need to have some type of memory to store the so-called virtual print out. It could either be a built-in memory or a provision for a port so the user could have the option of inserting a jumpdrive or a memory stick. Initiating this petition is a

    • I support this petition. just like screens can be plugged and then function braille displays should function just the same way. They function just like screens for the blind. Implementing the windows integrated drivers would cost less as well. In principle accessibility should not be more costly than the prize of the computer (nvda-project.org).

    • I don't use any braille displays, because of the limited availability due to closed source drivers. but i would definitely use one if they'd just be "plug and play"

    • Please make the braille displays accessible to everyone under any conditions weather it be screen reader or no. We need to have access not only with speach but with braille for those of us who are deaf blind or who do not know how to use a screen reader. We need better plug and play support and we cannot have displays focused on each screen reader.
