This is a petition to show how Canadians support our troops.

"Calgary city council voted against putting yellow "Support our Troops" ribbons on city vehicles after a heated debate Monday night.

Instead, council voted to look into selling the ribbons to raise money for military families.

Just one month ago, Toronto's decision to ban the stickers from some vehicles caused an uproar before it was eventually reversed by council.

Last week, Alderman Ric McIver brought forward a proposal to put the ribbon-shaped Support our Troops emblems on Calgary's vehicles.

A local entrepreneur was willing to donate 5,000 of the stickers, according to media reports.

But the plan was panned by Mayor Dave Bronconnier who said that using the stickers would give little tangible support to troops overseas and the city should instead do something practical."

We believe that this is just plain WRONG.

Putting on the stickers is NOT giving "little tangible support to troops"... it is showing how much we SUPPORT our Troops. There IS a difference between supporting our Brothers and Sisters...and supporting any particular MISSION. Our Troops CHOOSE to serve to protect Canada's interests..they do NOT CHOOSE in what way. Our POLITICIANS do. If you don't support a mission, BLAME the decision makers, and elect other ones, but STOP BLAMING the people who lay their lives on the line to protect Freedom around the world and here at home. It is time to recognize that there is a HUGE DIFFERENCE between the two.

We submit that the stickers do indeed show much TANGIBLE support to troops overseas, by reminding their FAMILIES that WE CARE and are behind their family members' decision to serve our Great Free Country.

So please sign this petition if you agree, and send the link to all of your friends. Together we can turn a ripple in a pond into a Tsunami of support.

We Thank You,

    • Even if Calgary's mayor thinks the ribbons provide "little tangible support to troops", it's still support, and every bit helps.

    • Everyone should have the right to express what they believe in and to RESPECT the brave Canadian men and women who have been sent overseas. Supporting our troops in this humanitarian mission is very important. They are those who risk their lives for a noble cause, the right for the Afghan people to freedom and for Afghan women to education and we should be proud and not ashamed that our country is taking part in this mission

    • Sticker = Support. A decision to refuse the stickers is cravenly and cowardly.

    • a small town in NS - Kingston/ Greenwood has it right - on every power pole - a yellow ribbon - on the walls and windows of the grocery stores, the banks, the bars, the convenience stores, the fast food joints - huge yellow ribbons, on most private and public vehicles - the yellow ribbon... Calgary could learn a lesson from small town NS

    • The least we can do is put stickers on our vehicles for the sacrifices our men and women are making. Why is this even an issue? To be any sort of public leader...must you be blind to society?
