A CALL FOR NATIONAL HEALTHCARE REFORM IN CANADA
We, the undersigned citizens of Canada, draw the attention of the Canadian Provincial and Federal
Legislature to the following:
To review and rectify the inequality of healthcare delivery from city to city, region to region and province to province. To ensure all Canadians have accessibility to timely diagnosis and the complete array of possible treatments.
To establish a Centre for Best Practices, as an information and research base to improve healthcare practices for patient-centred care and timely delivery of services with fiscal responsibility.
To mandate that all Family Physicians must be stopped from accepting a hidden fee for accepting new patients.
Healthcare decisions should be evaluated both by medical professions as well as an appointed volunteer group of consumers and their families and not solely by the government.
Cancer as well as other major diseases have a standardized treatment protocol. For example that Neupogen or Neulasta is provided to all cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and not just in some cancer centres.
Research monies raised in the public domain be equally divided between research and direct patient care.
Emergency centres be mandatory in cancer treatment centres .
Women prescribed Tamoxifen should be routinely tested for the CYP2D6 enzyme to determine whether they can metabolize the drug and not develop additional tumours.
Canadians be provided with fair access and information that a two-tier system already operates in Canada allowing them to make informed decisions for their healthcare.
Physicians and healthcare professions be given priority care, as their recovery directly impacts on the total healthcare delivery system to other patients. Delaying their care means delaying care of all patients.
Medical documentation information technology be established across Canada within 5 years to ensure confidential communication and accurate dissemination of healthcare information between treating professionals.
Establishment of a healthcare advocacy that provides Canadians with assistance during illness to make appropriate decisions in managing their care.
To preserve and ensure that Canadians can access timely quality healthcare.

- I am part of a study at Sunnybrook hospital determining the efficacy of Tamoxifen alone or chemotherapy and Tamoxifen as treatment for estrogen positive breast cancer patients. When I asked about CYP2D6, I was told I could have it done but for a fee of $400+ Canadian. I asked why this wouldn't be routinely done for at least patients in the study, because how on earth will they be able to draw accurate conclusion re: efficacy of Tamoxifen if the patient was able to metabolize efficiently. Was told that they are looking into offering it to all breast cancer patients, not just those informed enough to ask for it. I don't think at this date, that it is being offered as a matter of course.

- I had already made the assumption of the existence of a 2-tier health care system in Canada, but like all the others, my voice is not heard either. Some positive helpful changes need to be made asap to our current health care system.

- My sister-in-law recently had a full mastectomy and went through the same crisis that Carl Mark did. Stop this injustice. We are human beings and no one will understand the full impact of feeling "uncared" for until you are put in their shoes. Let's do whatever is humanly possible to help.
