As a student at California State University, Long Beach I am distressed to find that for the second consecutive year our Spring Recess coincided with the holiday that celebrates the life and legacy of Cesar Chavez.

The rumor has surfaced over the past few years, that observances of president's day or the birthdays of Washington or Lincoln would not result in the close of campus or classes, in exchange for the state holiday for Cesar Chavez.

We understand that during these hard economic times it is difficult to sacrifice working hours for students, staff, and faculty alike. We are only asking that we be treated with more honesty and respect. Given the fact that our tuition is perpetually rising, while programs, classes and faculty are being cut, we merely want to see the well-paid administration be a little more clear: a closed campus it may be, but it is not a holiday if it is a day off that we already have off.
