More Info at:
We the undersigned hereby request that Carlisle City Council and or Cumbria County Council enter into discussions with the owner of the Waverley Viaduct (namely British Railways Board), to agree the purchase of this listed structure, formerly a railway viaduct on the disused Waverley Route to Edinburgh.
The purchase would enable the development and construction of an environmentally friendly route across the River Eden on the western side of Carlisle, and would provide an interim traffic free Connect2 river crossing for walking and cycling.
Further we request:
1 That the viaduct is restored and maintained in a state which befits a Grade 2 Listed Structure to secure its future use as a means of access.
2 That the Councils do apply for financial assistance from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Sustrans or other Governmental / European Source for funding the restoration or as part of a Renaissance Scheme.
3 That discussions are held with local landowners to establish suitable approach routes to the viaduct for walking and cycling.

- As a cyclist, resident in Carlisle, I fully support the need for this viaduct to provide a much needed link in the cycling network, across the River Eden.

- Fully support this petition, I find it frustrating that the current state of the viaduct prevents cyclists and walkers from having access over the Eden at this point. The Council will have to do something as the construction is regularly vandalised and needs to be secured for our heritage.

- It would be a terrible shame if this connection between the two sides of the river was not restored to foot/cycle access.

- This is a useful link for pedestrians and cyclists and its potential as such deserves to be exploited. Additionally, it is one of the few remaining remnants of the North British Railway's presence in the Border City.

- My daughter and I use the cycle route from Engine Lonning to Bitts Park regulary in the summer, having the option to cross the river and visit Grandparents in Stanwix would be very much welcomed.

- As a walker I support this petition, it is a lovely walk and it would be a great shame if it was taken away from us altogether, there are not enough local walks as it is.

- myself and my little boy and our two dogs have always used this bridge , we spend nearly all our spare time down the river and were very saddend when the brigde was closed . If thebrigde was reopened and made safe maybe more families would be able to enjoy the gorgeous sights along the river Eden and improve there health while doin so .

- The viaduct is a fine example of Victorian architecture. It should be made safe by the provision of a substantial stone parapet wall and brought back into use as a footpath/cycleway providing access to both sides of the river.
