Speaker Pelosi,

During President Obama's September 9, 2009 address to a joint session of Congress, Representative Joe Wilson, who represents South Carolina's 2nd district, shouted "You lie!" after President Obama refuted the claim that his health care plan would provide coverage for illegal immigrants.

It is within the power of the House to hold Mr. Wilson accountable for his actions. Article I, Section 5 of the United States Constitution states that "Each House may punish its Members for disorderly Behavior."

Please tell Mr. Wilson that heckling the President of the United States in the chamber of the House of Representatives is disrespectful and will not be tolerated. We call on you to employ your constitutional power to punish Mr. Wilson and censure him at once.

Tell Mr. Wilson that such offhand insults to the President of the United States are uncalled for.

    • Rep. Wilson showed extraordinary disrespect for the Office of the President in addition to Mr. Obama himself. This is a sad day in United States history when an elected official taunts his own president in sacred chambers. No Democrat ever behaved with such contempt during speeches of the former administration. Please censure Rep. Wilson on behalf of the American people. Thank you.

    • Bringing teabagger / brownshirt tactics into Congress is a disgrace. If Joe Wilson has a problem with the President's proposal, I'm sure there are many agenda-driven media outlets (eg, foxnews) that would be more than happy to air his complaints. An elected representative disrupting a speech of the President of the United States is simply not appropriate.
