This petition, supported by the undersigned constituents, is directed to Councilmember Graham and other interested city officials. Its goal is to support the designation and construction of a dog park in Columbia Heights at the southwest corner of 11th Street and Park Road, NW.
We, the undersigned constituents of Columbia Heights and surrounding neighborhoods, respectfully urge you to support the establishment of a dog park at the above location. The southwest corner of 11th Street and Park Road, NW is an ideal location to be designated as a dog park for the following reasons:
- The area is centrally located to the residential area of Columbia Heights and is easily accessible from surrounding neighborhoods;
- The land does not appear to be suitable for development for any other use because WMATA owns and uses the space for ventilation;
- The surrounding area is home to hundreds of dog-owners seeking a well-maintained space to safely enjoy the outdoors in the company of our neighbors;
- Locating a dog park in this area will increase the amount of foot traffic along 11th Street an increasingly thriving and central corridor for the neighborhood.
In creating a dog park, we hope to accomplish multiple goals, including:
1. To establish a green space where well-behaved canine can exercise in a clean, safe environment without endangering or annoying people, property, or wildlife.
2. To develop a beautiful, well-maintained space, open to all dog lovers and friends who are willing to uphold the park's rules and regulations.
3. To view this park as a community project, in partnership with the city of Washington DC, designed to satisfy the needs of dog-owners and non-dog owners alike.
We commit to being responsible park patrons by obeying all park rules and regulations, partnering with officials in the development and maintenance of the park, and treating our fellow community members with respect and consideration.
