While we recognise the need for economies in UK Higher Education, we think it reckless to destroy Classics at Leeds. We call on the University to continue its support for this important subject.

- The University of Leeds claims to want to recruit and nurture promising young scholars. But how am I supposed to develop to the best of my potential while my department is being closed down? I could not recommend any of my friends to come and work for the University of Leeds after this experience.

- This is short-sighted in the extreme. Without Classics (a discipline which enjoys admirable dynamism and an outstanding history at Leeds, Leeds Universitys international reputation (not least in medieval studies) will be irreparably compromised.

- Having recently joined the Leeds Classics Department I've been so impressed by its dynamic and positive approach. The University is endangering its long-term academic reputation for the sake of a short-term financial gains, rather than finding ways to retain its mix of disciplines within the cuts it has to make.

- Cutting the classics department would be damaging for the university, both academically and in terms of prestige.

- Killing Classics is a poor short-term solution that will have dreadful long-term repercussions. Considering the fact that the Humanities tend to attract students and cost very little, this decision makes no sense.

- Strongly convinced that a grounding in the classics helps to provide a more rounded and balanced education than if it were omitted. I speak as someone with a maths/science background.

- What a disaster it would be for the University's reputation if Classics were to go. Why not just merge with Leeds Met and have done with it, if you prioritise money-making over academic standards so much?

- Not only is it reckless, it is completely short-sighted, as per usual from the University. In their drive to become one of the top 50 unis in the world, have they not realised that all except the specialist ones have Classics departments? The department even managed to turn a profit last year, in spite of continued cuts. While we have been told this will not affect our teaching, it definitely will. Less facilities for the students to use, less time for staff-student interaction and staff who would be rightly worried about their jobs. It disgusts me that the University, who do have other sources of income, are running the University as a business institution, and not a place of learning! It is integral to keep Classics at Leeds.
