Ethekwini Municipality have released a notice of intention to change the names of numerous streets in Durban...
It is generally internationally accepted that when a new road is built, it is named after a recent event / happening. As time passes the event becomes a historical affair, and the name of the road pays tribute to that event.
From the names of roads, directional maps are created; buildings and businesses are named. Amongst other things, stories and memories are created, and as time goes by grandparents share their stories with their nephews.
What can be more historically inspiring than the names of the roads/paths your forefathers walked on, where you, possibly decades later, still find yourself walking on today?
How tragic do we then see ANC's "rush to rewrite the history of KwaZulu-Natal" by renaming places using only ANC-affiliated freedom fighters? It is as if the names and events that do not fit into the ruling party's liberation narrative, are disdainfully rejected.
Dont we have better things to do; like stop crime, educate the population, protect the environment, and learn to live in health.
We sincerely urge you to exercise whatever rule possible to halt the approval of Durbans road name changes for the preservation of our history.
PS: Comments can be sent to:
Municipal Manager, 41 Margaret Mncadi Avenue, Durban, 4001,
or, Emailed to: corporategis@durban.gov.za,
or, Fax to: +27 (0)31 311 4024.

- Why don't you spend your time and money reducing the crime rate instead of changing the name of the street I have to report to the police I got mugged on!!!

- Like the petition states... we should be spending the money on stopping crime in a country which happens to have a city which is known around the world as one of the most dangerous cities in the world! Absolutely disgraceful!!!

- Focus on areas that need immediate attention first. Redirect the money to the fight against crime and social upliftment. Only after achieving this should we worry about petty things like name changes.

- Why are you renaming Umhlanga Rocks Drive to Beyers Naude Drive, it's Afrikaans-nothing against, we don't know him or the relevance of the name. We (people in the area spoken to) prefer Umhlanga Rocks Drive or Mhlanga Rocks Drive, like was suggested.

- No reason to EXPENSIVELY change names already established for ALL South Africans! Lets give new roads and new developments applicable names. Will this happen again if a new government is elected one day? The answer is clear to all - NO! What a waste of EVERY SOUTH AFRICANS TIME, MONEY & ENERGY! Please review this and make the right decision as the people have spoken here!
