This petition is being made due to the idiocy of those who choose to drink and drive. Many people have lost their loved ones due this. It is time the law needs to be changed. At the current moment, in Ontario if you are caught driving drunk this is what you are charged with...

Consequences under the Highway Traffic Act Minimum Penalties under the Criminal Code

Second Offence
3-year licence suspension*
Remedial measures requirement
Minimum 3 years ignition interlock condition upon reinstatement
2-year driving prohibition
14-day jail sentence

Third Offence
Lifetime licence suspension*
(reducible to 10 years if remedial measures requirement and other conditions met)
Ignition interlock condition for life if suspension reduced
3-year driving prohibition
90-day jail sentence

Fourth and Subsequent Offence
Lifetime licence suspension*
No possibility of reinstatement
Same as third offence

In addition to drinking and driving, Criminal Code convictions include criminal negligence causing bodily harm or death, manslaughter, dangerous driving and failure to remain at the scene of a collision.

This petition is suggesting that instead of being charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm or death, manslaughter and getting chances over and over again, those who are caught driving drunk should get their licence taken suspended for 5 years on the first offence and as well those who cause bodily harm or death be charged with intent. If someone gets behind the wheel and is drunk, than they have every intention of hurting or even killing another person.

    • There are way to many lives being taken and at risk due to drunk drivers. A lot of young people do not take this seriously and still drive when drunk. We need to make a new law so that these incidents are decreased.

    • I think this petition is the best one I have seen so far. I agree to the charges and am surprised that the government treates drinking and driving in such a minor way. 14 days Jail? That's it for one of the charges? That is ridiculous i had no idea but thanks to this petition I am finally aware.
