Re: Miss Karen Schwarz, Miss Peru 2009 - Typical Costume
Dear Miss Universe Organization,
We are deeply concerned and disappointed that Miss Peru, Karen Schwarz and her committee has made the choice of presenting a traditional Bolivian costume as Peruvian.
Our government has sent letters of request to Miss Schwarz's committee of choosing a costume that will represent their country.
The costume that they have chosen to present in the Miss Universe event is a costume from a traditional dance from ORURO-BOLIVIA named "La Diablada" which is presented every year in the Bolivian Carnaval. We consider this "Diablada" costume as an icon of our carnaval.
In a proclamation in 2001 The UNITED NATIONS EDUCATIONAL, SCIENTIFIC AND CULTURAL ORGANIZATION (UNESCO) has proclaimed The Carnival of Oruro" as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. We consider that if UNESCO has recognized such an important tradition from Bolivia, then Miss Peru and her committee should do the same.
We are making a request that Miss Peru-Karen Schwarz will be denied to appear at the typical costume contest in a Bolivian traditional costume.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter that affects to the whole Bolivian community around the world.
Our outmost respect for Miss Universe Organization

- The Miss Universe event is a wonderful way for all the countries that participate to teach the world about their culture. Bolivia is one of the richest countries in terms of folklore and culture. I have never been able to understand why Peru has been trying to usurp many of Bolivias beautiful dances. Some of them are Caporales and Morenada. The fact that now Peru is trying to claim that the Diablada is a Peruvian dance is very offensive to the Bolivian population. If Karen Schwarz is allowed to wear the Diablada costume in the contest, it will not only show the world that she is not proud of the actual Peruvian heritage but it will also mislead the world to believe that a beautiful Bolivian dance is from Peru. The Miss Universe organization should take action immediately and prevent Karen to wear this costume.

- I am very upset of what this came about. Miss Peru should of known of that costume. That costume was always worn on the Bolivian Parades and Bolivia Events. It is not right to try to take our traditional costume. We have had it for so long and I believe Miss Peru should just wear her own traditional costume From Peru!
