Given that: 1) Stop The War! has never collectively participated in or advocated for violence of any kind, or destruction of property, in any circumstance; 2) The Dean of Students Office is investigating STW members with the threat of probation, suspension, or expulsion without cause; 3) STW members stand falsely accused of conduct constituting the kind of serious danger to personal safety to members of our campus community, which military recruiters engage in every time the facilitate the deployment of students to the illegal and immoral war in Iraq, using their well-documented manipulative practices; 4) By Chancellor Wileys own admission, the UW is in violation of its own anti-discrimination policy by allowing military recruiters (and their "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" employment policy) access to campus; 5) And that these aforementioned truths add up to hypocritical, irresponsible, and intimidating conduct by the campus administration, which threatens the fundamental right to freedom of speech and conscientious dissent due all UW students.
We the undersigned, demand that the investigation against Paul Pryse and the campus organization known as Stop The War! be dropped immediately, and followed by an apology to both the individual and the group for this vicious and baseless attack on STW members' character and constitutional rights.

- As at Holyoke Community College, George Mason University, Kent State University and many others, students will prevail in defending their right to free speech at Madison!

- This is ridiculous and the administration should be ashamed. As a former member of Stop the War, I am aware of its purely pacifist ideology and complete unwillingness to use violence to achieve its goals on this campus. The right to protest should be something that an institution of higher education should not only be defending but promoting as well, in order to encourage active citizinship in its students.

- Why on earth does the US say its fighting for "freedom" in Iraq when there is no freedom of speech here?

- Chair of Advisory Board, Traprock Peace Center. This is another in a wave of repressions at campuses this fall - at Holyoke Community College (MA), George Mason University, Harold Washington College (Chicago), Kent State, and Hampton University. Recently, students have had stunning victories at Kent State and Hampton. The situation facing student activists at Wisconsin/Madison is outrageous. I have no doubt that the Wisconsin students will continue to receive national and international support, and that the right to free speech will win again.

- The right to demonstrate against an illegal and immoral war, also the right to consciously object to any participation in it, is a hall mark of human dignity. To peacefully demonstrate and refuse to murder on behalf of an immoral government is human dignity expressed. The act of starting an illegal war is human dignity discarded. If the students have more dignity than the American president, they should not be penalised for this, they should be commended and in a civilised society they would be. Shame on you Madison.

- The attack on free speech is a real one. Will our administration prove to fall in line with the trend of intimidation or will it voice the progressive ideals of the campus and refuse and resist the repressive tactics of the Military Science Department and the Federal Government?

- That individuals can be targeted and denied education, not for their own actions, but only for membership in an unpopular group or political party is reminiscent of totalitarian governments. All Americans should reject this behavior from their government as an unacceptable precedent, and chastise any Universities that give in to pressures to enforce anti-1st amendment policies.

- It seems that the college is behaving as if it answers to the military science department, instead of the other way around. I would like to know what purpose a military science building serves. I am also wondering if the college devotes equal resources to a peace sciences department.
