The DODEA School Board changed its age requirements for enrollment into the pre kindergarten and kindergarten program for the 09-10 school year from Oct. 16th to Sept. 1st. They put this policy into affect after children were already enrolled for this year. They then decided that they would not grandfather in the children that are enrolled this year in pre kindergarten and in kindergarten to move on if their birth dates fell after the new cutoff of Sept. 1st. Their policy states that no exceptions will be made. It has come to my attention that they are grandfathering in the kindergarten kids next year but are still refusing to allow the pre kindergarten kids to move on.
I am not arguing with the new cutoff dates. Had I been notified that it was a possibility that this would happen then I wouldnt have enrolled my child this year but waited for next year. My daughter loves school, and I have been told by her teacher that she meets and exceeds all requirements to move onto kindergarten next year. Yet she is being held back because of a policy that wasnt passed until after she started school. This policy needs to be changed so that it doesnt effect students that are enrolled this year but starts fresh with the kids that are enrolled for next school year. This is going to be very damaging to their self esteem, and can hurt their entire approach to school.

- I feel that if these kids have already been in school why cant you all just wait until next year. Im sure those 54 students wont hurt anything.

- Regression in Children's education is unacceptable which is what will clearly happen if these children are not allowed to move forward to Kindergarten.

- I am also a parent that has a child being affected by this policy change. This policy change should not affect pre-k children that were enrolled for the 2008-2009 school year.

- Here at West Point, we have been talking with the local Principal, the Superintendent, and the local School Board; all to no avail. We are looking at other options to pursue this further.

- I have a daugther currently finishing the pre-k school year, she is expecting to go to kindergarden like her sisters. She turns 5 on sept. 11th, I spoke to Caps where she is treated and they say this can cause a set back in her behavior and even cause depression. I don't find it fair that after a whole school year in pre-k she can't continue to the next grade with her classmates. When she sees her classmates in Kindergarden and she is still in pre-k will cause damage to her selfsteem and I will hold DoDEA responsible.

- My daugther is one of the students that will have to repeat the PreK, she is already showing signs that she is sad because her friends are going to Kinder without her and she doesn't understand why she has to stay back. I would like for an exception since it's not correct, it doesn't benefit the children to be emotionaly affected just because...we need to not be arbitrary in our desicions we need to make informed desicions and see how they will affect others.
