Hi guys, You may have heard about the policy BCIT is trying to implement which would forbid pets on campus (with the exclusion of pets helping those with disabilities). A dozen teachers will be affected by the policy as they all bring their lovable pets to school on a regular basis
The policy has been drafted and the teachers have until the end of May to make their voices heard.
If our voices aren't heard many of the teachers we love at BCIT risk not bring their awesome dogs to school with them everyday. Everyone I have talked to fully supports having dogs at school but we need BCIT to realize our support. Sign this petition which will be given directly to the BCIT policy makers. I also strongly encourage writing a letter directly to BCIT that states why you think BCIT should reverse their new policy.
We need your support!!!
Sincerely,
The Undersigned

- If the dog is trained, obedient and not a pest, there's no reason to restrict dogs. Balanced dogs give off an casual, relaxing, calm environment & in many cases help rather than hinder.

- The only place a dog could/should be barred is a grocery store/restaurants due to health policies. Well balanced/trained dogs should be welcomed anywhere their owners are.

- Dogs on campus are part of what sets BCIT apart - in my experience, the staff who bring their dogs to work are attentive and their companions well behaved. All the students I have contact with agree, dogs on campus make BCIT a more welcoming place.

- I wanted to thank everyone for the many thoughtful letters of support I have received over the past week regarding the proposed policy to ban dogs on BCIT's campus. I appreciate your thoughtful comments. Also, thanks for initiating this petition so we can get the word out to more people. Please add your signature if you feel Cleo and dogs like her add to the positive environment here at BCIT. If you take a moment to add a comment or two, it is more powerful. Thanks again. Cleo and I appreciate your love.

- If dogs have been on campus without incident, they should be allowed to stay. Had dogs in my classes for two years and it was absolutely not a problem.

- Banning dogs at BCIT would be a horrible idea. As a former student, instructors bringing dogs provided a personalized feel to the classroom. There were never problems, the dogs were loved by all. Particularly Kleo, Mary Kay Thurston's dog. She is almost the mascot of the journalism program!

- Having dogs on campus enriches our learning environment. Far from it being a negative thing it actually improves our experience in post-secondary.

- I know not everbody loves dogs, but all of the owners of dogs I've seen at BCIT are very responsible. Seeing a happy dog wagging his tail brings a lot of "wellness in the workplace " at BCIT.

- I love seeing a certain golden Lab in our deparment. I am afraid of some dogs like pit bulls and don't want to see those on campus, but sweet dogs like Labs brighten my day and make up for the fact that we can never own one due to allergies. If dog owners are irresponsible, let's take it from there. Most dog owners are so careful.

- An all-out ban on animals on campus is not the answer. Create reasonable, easily-enforceable guidelines to which all pets and their owners must adhere. If people (or animals) can't behave responsibly, react (ie. ban) accordingly.

- Dogs are generally good for morale. Those with allergies and/or fears of pet dirt or attack should be able to work things out within their department, work areas.

- Dogs are used in therapy, and during those stressful times in a college student's life why wouldn't you allow an animal around that soothes, comforts and brightens one's day...

- I had two instructors who would bring their dogs to class and they added more personality to the program. I don't understand why anyone would have a problem with well- behaved dogs on campus!

- I so enjoy seeing dogs on campus that I keep a stash of dog cookies to give them (even though I don't have a dog of my own). I agree with the comments about setting guidelines and making arrangements in each work area. An outright ban would be very sad and unnecessary.

- MaryKay Thurston's friend, Cleo, is the most adorable, gentle, calm and sweet girl in the world! She adds a little happiness to the hallways, and has never been a problem, everyone loves her. I really hope MaryKay can have the peace of knowing that Cleo is welcome at BCIT.

- The proposed ban is too sweeping. There has to be some discretion.
