Depleted-Uranium Use in Iraq:
Killing and Creating Serious Disease in U.S. Veterans and Iraqi Civilians

The Pentagon and the United Nations estimate that the U.S. and Britain used 1,100 to 2,200 tons of armor piercing shells made of depleted uranium during attacks during the Iraq War in just two months in 2003 far more than the 375 tons used in the 1991 Gulf War.
In the human body, DU may cause harm to the internal organs, a weakened immune system and cancer due to both its chemical toxicity as a heavy metal and its release of radiation. The radioactivity persists for over 4.5 billion years and can cause cancer, leukemia, brain damage, kidney failure, and extreme birth defects.
Doctors in Iraq have estimated that birth defects have increased by 2-6 times, and 3-12 times as many children have developed cancer and leukemia when DU was used in Iraq in 1991.
Iraq has seen birth defects which would break a heart of stone: babies with terribly foreshortened limbs, with their intestines outside their bodies, with huge bulging tumors where their eyes should be, or with a single eye-like Cyclops, or without eyes, or without limbs, and even without heads. U.S. soldiers too have fathered children with no eyes, stunted arms, and rare abnormalities classically associated with radiation damage.
When veterans become ill due to exposure to DU, mysterious illness seems to the first and often the only diagnosis ever made. Veterans are then left to fend for themselves, sick and unable to work, with little hope of a normal life again. Many have developed cancer and have died prematurely.

The use of DU is a crime against humanity
Therefore we ask:

The United States government to end the use of depleted uranium for military purposes and for an investigation into its use in Iraq.
For a cleanup of the radioactive, contaminated areas so that it will not inflict further harm.
Full benefits/reparations and medical care to U.S. veterans and Iraqi civilians affected by depleted uranium.
