Dunking Statistic
1.) The dunk is representative of the offensive evolution of the game since the 1950s. It is an undeniable facet of the offensive attack for the more athletic players.
2.) Specific plays are designed around the dunk similar to players run specifically for a 3pt, shotex: back screen set for the baseline alley-oop.
FOULS
3.) The dunk often results in and 1 plays which can have a direct impact on the:
-# of fouls called
-# of foul shots taken
If more players are dunking-creating 3 pt. play possibilities, then players are forced to concentrate on foul shooting proficiency.
4.) As a stat, the reader has a better idea of the flow/pattern of the game
REBOUNDING
5.) Low post plays represent high \% shots
Under the basket activity is already included in stats: ex. Rebounding
-Rebounds have a direct impact of the flow of the game by creating opportunities on both ends of the floor
-Coaches can look at these numbers and determine how effective the offensive/defensive scheme was against a particular team
This same logic applies to having the quantitative analysis of the dunking frequency and how that information can be used to devise better strategy on offense and defense. If a coach has the info on the # of dunks committed on and/or against his team, his game plan may have to be adjusted accordingly.
-Dunking is a developed skill above the rim that deserves to be officially recognized like Rebounding.
3 POINTERS
6.) The 3 pt. shot is a specialty area that was necessarily integrated into the offensive scheme b/c some can shoot long range and some cannot.
-Players are drafted/traded specifically for their ability to shoot the 3.
-3 pt. shots are not high \% and only certain players shoot them consistently-yet its still a stat
-Owners build teams around these players b/c 3pt shooting is an integral part of the game.
The 3 pointers is a stat designed to recognize specific/distinguished players, as would be the dunk.
FAST BREAKS
7.) Box score summaries oftentimes included commentary on the # of points scored off of fast break opportunities.
-Why not include the number of dunks along with that considering a majority of fast breaks result in a dunk any way.
-Sportscasters frequently reference the amt. of dunks during a game scored by a specific player in conjunction with video highlights
ASSISTS
8.) Players who dish out assists are afforded the honor of receiving a recorded stat for that effort-so why shouldnt the player who receives that pass for a dunk be afforded the same opportunity?
-If an assist is recorded, that means some form of offense took place as a result-why not denote what type it was?
Adding the dunk statistic demonstrates the symbiotic relationship between the passer and the dunker.
-Oftentimes a great pass ends up in a great dunk; this highlights the importance of the PG as well
DUNKERS
9.) With the addition of younger, more athletically explosive players like Kobe Bryant, Vince Carter, Kevin Garnet, Allen Inversion, Ray Allen, Steve Francis, Corey Maggot etcthey bring a new form of excitement to the NBA that should be recognized officially as a statistic.
-Some players are drafted/traded strictly for their athletic potential
-Veteran players/legends like Michael Jordan, Dominique Wiliness, Lateral Sprawl, Dr. J etc. incorporated dunking into a major component of their games and legacies
-so dunking should be tallied into their career statistics for historical purposes
Ex. Oscar Robertson is remembered as on of the greatest players of all time averaging a triple double throughout his career, but triple doubles werent officially kept on record.
-Why now and not then? Because the NBA realized the importance of this accomplishment.
-Triple Doubles are considered a remarkable feat worthy of recognition
-The dunk should be similarly considered
Why deny these up and coming players the chance to establish their own legacies if they posses a talent that distinguishes them from the average player?
THE LEAGUE
10.) The NBA is already trying to implement rule changes to encourage more offensive production.
-The current climate in the NBA is to promote offense in order to make the game faster paced and more attractive to the fan base.
-Consumer satisfaction is the ultimate determinant for the financial stability of the game; Ultimately, the fans buy tickets/paraphernalia etc. b/c they live vicariously through these players; they purchase sneakers, jerseys etc. b/c of a desire to emulate the players athletic ability Dunking plays a large role in attracting a loyal fan base.
-Franchise players who posses this ability have the potential to transform entire teams and the teams they play in.
ex: Vince Carter has single-handedly revitalized Canadian basketball b/c of his spectacular dunking ability and athleticism.
-Players like him have the capability to pack home arenas and on the road with fans eagerly anticipating what the players have up their sleeves on the court.

- It's about time that dunking be officially recognized as a statistic. Like you said, coaches would be able to build better defensive schemes for players like for instance SHAQ, who's game relies heavily on post-play and dunking.
