The American Indian Movement, Northeast Woodlands, is calling for an economic boycott against Squaw Mountain Resort in Greenville, Maine, where activities of a recreational nature occur year-round.

The owner of this resort, Jim Confalone, who resides in Florida, has steadfastedly refused to change the name of his resort, which is offensive to the traditional indigenous women of Maine. Confalone's arrogant stance is contrary to the spirit of the Maine State legislature which has banned the use of the word "squaw" as a place name. The new law cannot force a privately owned business, such as Confalone's, to change its name.

For a boycott to be effective, all people of good will have to be supportive of this action. The American Indian Movement, Northeast Woodlands, is asking for the support of all action-minded groups and individuals across the United States and Canada, Indian and non-Indian, to join in on this endeavor.

Confalone must be made to realize that he has to forfeit the name or he will forfeit the dollars.

For the respect of Indian People we do this.

    • If you knew your American Indian history as we do, you would know that "Squaw" is a white man's terminology, not Indians. To the white men, "Squaw" means the same thing as a "Whore" and we of NWFJ deeply resent this terminology!

    • I agree with the AIM in regards of racial insult of the word squaw of all Native Americans in Canada and as well as the United States. I live in Canada and I am a native. I have respect for other races.

    • Isn't it time for this sort of "slander" to come to an end? We cannot change the past, but we can keep bad habits and bad thoughts from reaching the future. The venacular used 100 years ago is, at times, no longer acceptable as we grow as a people. Renaming this resort so that it doesn't demean other people seems like such a small chore that would hurt no one but heal many. The owner could name the resort after himself, forever reminding people that he had the heart to do what was right.

    • I grew up where I heard a lot of names like "squaw" and "breed". The names offended me, and even worse, made many of the children on the Navajo Rez. feel ashamed about themselves because they constantly heard such degrading comments not only about themselves, but also their family and their ancestors. When African-American children hear the word Niger, especially used towards them, they get offended. The same as with the Native Americans when these names are used with them. They say it's equal between all of the races in this country. B.S., take a look around and listen to what is being said. In so many places offensive names are being thrown about as if they're nothing. It's hurting, not just to the Native American children, but to the Native Americans as a whole.
