The recent proposal by HRD minister Arjun Singh to introduce 27.5 per cent reservation for OBC in centrally funded educational institutes, including IITs and IIMs will take India back from where she is today. The educational institutes are the backbone of Indias economy. These institutes have enabled us to reach where we are now.
Everyone understands the need for all sections of the Indian society to get an opportunity to be part of this vibrant economy. But reservation based on caste and community is not an answer to this. These policies have been here for the last 50 years and it has not met its objectives to the extend it should have.
If the Government sincerely cares for these people and for the country it should evaluate what the real reason for the failure is and correct it. Currently in India no institute discriminates any student based on their caste or religion during admission. However many students dont make it to the institutes because of the economic reasons. Also many students who come from economically weaker sections but do not fall in the reservation criteria do not get a fair opportunity too. To make things right and to make a difference to those who really deserves it these are some suggestions.
1. Make education mandatory and free for all till the age of 15.
2. Propose reservation based on economic status.
3. Provide opportunity for students to earn while they study
We understand that this will be a bold move but at the same time we hope that this Government will stand up for the people of India and not be tied down by petty politics.

    • We should start looking for better options than the non-working reservation system in place now.

    • We used to have a system like this. It was called affirmitive action. It really never worked like it was supposed too. No group should be given special treatment. Education should be available to all. Based on grades and financial need.

    • Respected Sir, If Jawaharlal Nehru during his regime, didn't make any such reservations, why are we doing now ? I know that perhaps this step was taken with a view to boost the underpriveledged. But education especially the higher education is not any means to do this. In today's scenario where nearly 2 lakhs students are striving to get into IIMs, such reservations could be highly demoralising. Pls do think and take appropriate decisions. Our future depends on your decision.

    • The current educational institutes provide the "tomorrow" of our nation. Such a step would only provide a "darker tomorrow". Let us move from "darkness to light" - "thamasoma jyothirgamaya".

    • Scrap this system. Let the ones who really deserve it study over there. Reservation based on finaancial background seems acceptable. Look at this, people who enjoyed the benefits of reservation are mostly in government services and obvoiusly are in a better off situation. And most of them are corrupt. now their children will obviously be occupying these seats. Think about it!

    • I support this peititon. What the government is trying to do is outrageous! Such laws will only degrade the high reputations of institutes such as IIT, IIM, etc. You cannot take away thr rights of the students who genuinly work hard! If this is passed, it will be the biggest slap on our applauded education system.

    • I believe our very well educated President of India and Prime Minister of India also dreaming for BEST tomorrow. I think they also feel that Reservations in Education System would spoil all our dreams to make India DEVELOPED. I know they have realized upto which extent DIRTY POLITICIANS can spoil Nation for Political Gains. It is upset, President/PM not make out what they feel is right.
