Dear Mr. У Dubhghaill,
RTEs Public Service Broadcasting Charter states:
RTЙ shall, at all times, strive to reflect fairly and equally the regional, cultural and political diversity of Ireland and its peoples.
In accordance with this principle, we strongly urge Lyric FM to reinstate in full its specialist jazz programming. The recent cutbacks are very extreme:
a cut in total airtime from 5 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours; and
only one hour goes out prior to 1 am now whereas all did before.
The reduced schedule is very unsatisfactory compared to other European public service broadcasters. It was introduced with no prior notice or explanation and no comparable reductions have been applied to other "specialist" genres such as contemporary classical and world music.
Apart from the impact on listeners this reduction in programming removes a vital platform for the promotion of Ireland's jazz musicians. This penalizes the success of recent developments in Irish jazz, which has been recognized by leading world figures such as US saxophonist Dave Liebman. Lyric FM should be supporting Irish music of all types and not stifling it.

- As if it wasn't poor enough already: I grew up in Ireland, listening to RTE, and it took a trip to France for me to discover jazz.

- To take away our jazz is to remove the spice from our life, the cream from our coffee and the sugar from our tea.

- As chairperson of Limerick Jazz Society it is totally unsatisfactory the way Lyric have gone about the axing of the best jazz programme on the radio I would like to express my deep disappointment at the loss of such a great show and I would urge the powers that be to reconsider this decision.

- I agree with this petition - what a poor choice in programming decision-making, certainly there are other programs that don't have the listenership as high as the Jazz Alley and Third Wave

- Lyric FM is directly funded by the license fee as well as advertising and as such has an obligation to reflect the diversity of all aspects of Ireland's musical culture including jazz. Decisions like this not only undermine their public service remit but also bring into question the validity of them being funded by the state.

- Public service broadcasting, especially an arts based publically-funded station such as Lyric, has an obligation to treat jazz as a serious artform, and therefore the decision to reduce the hours of jazz programming is not only regrettable but artistically negligible.

- This proves to me that Lyric is not a station for serious art form. It just says to me it is becoming more and more commercial. They are also doing this with classical music too. This does not suprise me but really disappoints me.

- Lyric FM is the only source of jazz radio programming in Ireland. Please reconsider the current decimation of these fine broadcasts and bring jazz back on the air.

- As a public broadcaster, you are supposed to cater for all sections of society. With this cut in service you are discriminating against a very large jazz enthusiast community. We pay a license fee for this????Cop on

- By this action [cutting back on jazz airtime] it would seem that Lyric FM would prefer to keep the listening public in the caves rather than educate them .

- A nonsensical piece of schedule fiddling that curtailed the enjoyment of many many listeners and a move that was contrary to RTE's obligation to public service broadcasting.

- there are a few great people in limerick working really hard to build a future for jazz here, why are you making it more difficult for them?

- Feel very strongly on this matter. I thoroughly enjoy Lyrics programming but it is now impossible for me to listen to any weekly jazz on irish radio.
