The University of Edinburgh has always had a successful and acclaimed academic record. It is consistently named as one of the top UK Universities in the Sunday Times Good University Guide. However, in recent years this has fallen - in 2008 Edinburgh dropped 5 places to 18th in the UK. This is largely because the teaching facilities at our University are lagging behind the rest of the UK.
16 Universities in the UK have 24 hour libraries - Edinburgh needs one too. The University of Edinburgh needs a 24-hour library to give its students the flexibility and space to get a better degree. The library is already too crowded and longer opening hours would help this congestion. Moreover, in this current economic crisis, more students are working longer hours to help pay for their studies - they need a 24 hour library. We already have 24-hour micro labs which are often extremely busy. Edinburgh students deserve the best resources and teaching that is possible - a 24-hour library will show that the Edinburgh University executive are dedicated to achieving this aim.

- A 24 hour library, with equal access to all floors, would be greatly beneficial for students who are obliged to study at unusual times; if we can have a 24 hour microlab, surely we can have a 24-hour study resource?

- Students studying from abroad are used to 24 hour libraries at Universities overseas, and expect these facilities to be available when they study at Edinburgh

- Absolutely absurd that Edinburgh University does not yet offer a basic service of a 24 hour access library for its students.
