To whom it may concern,
My name is Angela McGill,I currently live in Calumet City, IL. I along with other minorities have a major issue with pre-employment background checks that include credit investigations. Personal money troubles
shouldn't have any bearing on the ability to do a honest days work. How and why is this Legal? This is another loop hole form of discrimination. There are no laws prohibiting "discrimination" against people with bad credit histories. Credit check policy's has a disparate impact that keeps a legally protected group of minorities from getting employment. This practice overwhelmingly denies employment to African Americans and other minorities mostly because of poor credit history this should definitely result in Race-based discrimination claims all across the United States. A 2000 study by Freddie Mac found striking race-credit correlations: African Americans 48\% Bad Credit...Hispanics 34\% Whites 27\%, the race-credit correlation is even stronger than the income credit correlation: Annual income: Under 25,000 36\% Bad Credit....25,000 -44,999 33\% Bad credit..45,000-64,000 25\% Bad credit. My point is this, there should be a Bill that needs to be in place, that companies can't run your credit for employment. I was told by my employer that it would show if I was trustworthy or not. I am not being extended a line of credit I am trying to get a job. This should be a Federal law implemented immediately. Please Consider!! A bring to the floor. This is a major issue that is being ignored. This country is supposed to be based on the Constitution and yet Rich people and Corporations still find a way to beat the system and hold Minorities back. African Americans and minorities have it hard in America the land of the free. And there are situations out of our control sometimes that cause bad credit. For example a spouses death, basing income off two people and you are no longer together, hospital bills, Sickness, Divorce. Stand up for our Rights!!! Please Sign this petition for change.

- Why are we allowing employers to get away with? just another means for them to hold us back & not give us a chance to redeem ourselves when given the opportunity to do so!

- I totally agree. Not hiring those with less than great credit is credit discimination and should be outlawed.

- I have been telling my husband that doing a credit check for employment is discrimination. If we do not stop it now, there is no telling how bad unemployement will be in the future. We are being judged by man for issues we have had. So instead of educating and helping your fellow man, we are kept down

- I am going through the same thing. I don't think my personal life is a reflection of my work ethic or my ability to do work. How can someone try to get their life back in order if they are being denied employment because of their bad credit report or background check? I've never been convicted or anything, but it's just like on an employment application when they ask if you've ever been convicted and that a "yes" will not necessarily bar you from employment. That's a bunch of bull. As soon as an employer sees that "yes", they automatically label you. I recently had an employer turn me away for employment because I had been terminated from my previous job. I was well qualified for the job, and he said so himself. However, once I told him that I had been terminated, his demeanor completely changed. Now, I am not a bad person. I was honest enough to tell him exactly what happened with my previous employer, however, the only thing he heard was the word "terminated". He didn't take into consideration the details.

- If anything the job is supposed to help you to get the money to pay off your debt. Not being accepted for the job does not help the economy at all!

- I applied for police officer positions and don't understand why my credit has anything to do with law enforcement, especially a low paying job as law enforcement.

- we wonder why our unemployment rates keep soaring. people are coming out of college with mountains of debt and since there are so many, how do you select qualified applicants? next we will be saying that it is okay to base employment on height and weight...this must be stopped
