We the undersigned strongly disagree with the proposed cutbacks to EAL teaching as outlined in Budget 2009. We call on the Minister for Finance not to implement these cutbacks at a time when unprecedented numbers of children for whom English is not a first language are being educated in our schools.

    • As someone who spends the greater part of his working week visiting mainstream and language support teachers in post-primary classrooms I am dismayed and extremely disheartened at the insidious shortsightedness of these forthcoming cuts and their inevitable direct impact on equality of educational opportunity for our newcomer students.

    • If you go ahead with this cut in education for immigrant children, it will cost all of us in the future: these children will not be able to integate into society and find jobs in the future. They will become a burden on the state.

    • Please dont cut the vulnerable where you think they cant object. Supporting the most vulnerable person in a family or country improves the lives of everyone in the family or country.
